Gilbert M. Atkin, 1877-1969, came to Banff in 1905 shortly after completion of postgraduate studies in medicine. He first worked with Dr. Brett and continued to practice medicine in Banff, where he raised his family. During the First World War, Atkin served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps.

Textual records are primarily military medical material. Financial papers pertain to medical equipment. History / Biographical
Raphel (Ray) Bagley, 1880-1973, was a rancher and guide in the Red Deer, Onion Lake and Coleman districts of Alberta, Canada. Bagley came to the Lacombe district of Alberta in 1892. He homesteaded and ranched while guiding with the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies and conducting private trail rides throughout the southern Rockies from Waterton Lakes National Park to Banff National Park. Bagley wrote poems on western and trail riding themes, self-publishing a volume titled "Those Other Days" in 1969.

Fonds consists of poems in manuscript and published form, n.d., 1969; other textual material, n.d., 1926; photographs pertaining to the Bagley family, undated; and a sound recording of Bagley reading poems, ca.1970. Included are components for book "Those Other Days"; calendar from Ike and Alma Mills, 1926; letterhead from Crowsnest Ranch, Coleman, Alberta, n.d.; and scrapbook, 1918-1925, pertaining to the winter sports career of Bagley's niece Syd Brewster (Graves), including Banff Winter Carnival, competitive skating and employment at the Chateau Frontenac as winter sports instructor. Recorded poems are "The Bulgy Squaw", "Sweet Annabelle" and "Muskeg Joe."

The Committee was a planning and fundraising body for library / seniors centre, Banff, Alberta, Canada. It was formed in 1980 through the initiative of the Banff Library Board and was composed of representatives of Banff School District No. 102, Banff Library, senior citizens groups, library users and community groups. The committee was responsible for raising 300 thousand dollars towards building construction costs.

Fred C. Bell, 1883-1971, was a physician, hospital administrator, mountaineer and officer of the Alpine Club of Canada. He lived at Winnipeg, Manitoba and Vancouver, British Columbia. Marcella E. Bell was also a mountaineer and Alpine Club member.

History / Biographical
Ulysses LaCasse (or Ulysse; or La Casse), 1888-1972, was a trail guide and national park warden at Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta, Canada. LaCasse came to Banff in 1908 and worked in various cooking jobs including trail cook for surveys and trail outfits. He guided Caroline Hinman's trail riding groups before joining the Canadian Army in Europe and Siberia. LaCasse accompanied Byron Harmon, Soapy Smith and Louis Freeman on their five hundred mile expedition through the Canadian Rockies, 1924. LaCasse was a long-time warden in the Castle Mountain and Lake Louise districts

Professional series contains volumes of textual records, photograph albums and photographs in two sub-series: A. Warden and civil service papers and photographs, and B. Guiding and outfitting papers and photographs. Professional / personal life series contains volumes of textual records, as well as photographs, in two sub-series: A. Scrapbooks, and B. Other material.
Textual records consist of warden journals, 1934-1949, and scrapbooks, 1911-1961. Journals record weather conditions, wildlife observations, enforcement, construction and maintenance duties, etc. around Castle Mountain and Lake Louise. Scrapbooks contain correspondence and memoranda, 1929-1948, from LaCasse's civil service career. Textual records also include diary of Mavis Benedict, 1917, kept during Caroline Hinman pack trips; copy of a ski trip diary; and biographical notes on LaCasse, ca.1950. Photograph albums pertain to a Caroline Hinman trip in the Mount Assiniboine area, 1917; Columbia Icefield expedition, 1924; and horse trips in the Canadian Rockies, ca.1925.

Earle Birney, 1904-1995, was a writer, poet and educator at Toronto, Ontario. Birney lived in Banff from 1911 until 1917.

Fonds consists of Earle Birney textual records, 1896-1971, n.d.; recordings of Birney reading his works, 1967, 1982; and portraits of Birney, ca.1967. Textual records are excerpts from the Earle Birney papers pertaining to Banff and the Canadian Rockies; including correspondence, 1918-1924, biographical material, 1971, drafts of poems, 1941-1952, printed material, 1948-1970, and Birney family correspondence, 1896-1917.

History / Biographical
Leonard Henry Leacock, 1904-1992, was a musician and educator at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Leacock was born in England and raised in Banff, Alberta. He was educated in Banff and Boston and through the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, and the Royal School of Music, London, England. Leacock joined the staff of Mount Royal College, Calgary as a piano teacher in 1924 and retired from teaching ca.1989. His music career also included performing, composing and adjudicating. Throughout his life, Leacock was an avid mountaineer and photographer. He took numerous hiking and horse trips in the Banff, Jasper and Yoho areas and sometimes worked in trail camps or as a guide.

Fonds consist of four separate series: A. I.A. Photography: negatives; B. I.C. Photography: transparencies, 35mm; C. I.D. Photography: prints; D. I.B. Photography: lantern slides.
Fonds consists mainly of scenic transparency views arising from Leacock's climbs, hikes, horse and car trips in the Canadian Rockies and Selkirks from the Crowsnest Pass through Jasper National Park, ca.1939 to 1984. Also included are travels in Yukon, Canada and the United States, including Alaska. Negatives date from 1925 to 1940? and pertain to Assiniboine, Lake Louise, Banff, Banff-Jasper, Columbia Icefield and other mountain areas; also natural history, including wildflowers and wildlife. A small number of negatives are accompanied by prints. Other prints pertain to Leacock, family, events and scenic views.
Textual records include letters, 1926-1986, 1 cm; diaries, 1930-1934, 1943, 2 items; scrapbooks and clippings, 1931-1936, ca.6 cm; manuscript scores of vocal and instrumental music, before 1985, 8 cm; concert programmes for which Leacock wrote the notes, 1962-1969, 37 items; other concert programmes, [ca.1945]-1986, 2 cm; writings, 1924, 1928, n.d., 4 items; other material, 1931-1987, 8 items. Diaries pertain to Leacock's personal life, giving details of musical, writing, artistic and dramatic activities; teaching and tour guiding; hikes and climbs in the Canadian Rockies; and friends, including Herbert Hahn and Stewart Cameron. Some letters are from Earle Birney, 1926-1978.
Sound recordings are interviews with Leacock re his career in music, including performing, composing and teaching; also music played by Leacock. Also includes one cassette recording [ca.1985-1992] of Doug Hawkes interviewing Leacock re: a pack trip he went on around 1931 between Gleichen and Jasper and back; cassette includes a story of a camp trip at Castlegar.

Marguerite Beryl Orr Rutherford (also known as Marguerite Orr), 1903-1993, was a businesswoman and outdoor enthusiast at Banff and Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She was the daughter of Lorne and May Orr and grand-daughter of Wesley Fletcher Orr, early mayor of Calgary. Marguerite Orr grew up in Banff, where she attended high school with Earle Birney. In 1927, she married Clyde "Rusty" Rutherford, from whom she was later separated. During WWII, Rutherford worked as a hospital assistant at Whitehorse, Yukon. She later owned Cottage Crafts in Calgary and sold Eskimo art, ca.1960, when it was just becoming popular. Rutherford was a close friend of Allen Bill, war correspondent and later editor and sports columnist for the Calgary Herald.
