- The Elizabeth Parker hut was named after one of the founding members of the Alpine Club of Canada, Elizabeth Parker. The hut is located in Yoho National Park, near Lake O'Hara in British Columbia. The hut is one of the most popular accommodations run by the Alpine Club of Canada. The Elizabeth Parker hut is made up of two buildings; the main hut and Wiwaxy Cabin. The total capacity of the two buildings is 24 people in the summer and 20 people in the winter. According to the Alpine Club of Canada Guide for Backcountry Huts: Elizabeth Parker Info Sheet: "The present Wiwaxy cabin was the first hut in the Lake O’Hara area, built in 1912 by the Canadian Pacific Railway. This was the same year that the ACC applied for and was granted a two-acre lease for a future hut on the south shore of Lake O’Hara, the site of the Club’s 1909 annual camp. In 1919, the CPR built the present Elizabeth Parker Hut, and by 1923 had built a further 11 huts in the meadow. In 1923/24, the CPR moved all but the first two huts down to the lakeshore, and seven years later donated the last two in the meadow to the ACC. The Club was able to exchange its lakeshore lease for a meadow lease, and in 1931 was in business with a hut at Lake O’Hara - the Elizabeth Parker Hut. As you can expect with log buildings, the Elizabeth Parker Hut has required substantial renovations and upkeep. Over the years the hut has seen a new floor, a new roof, new timbers and new foundation logs, as well as completely new interior furnishings. The outhouses are new, a stove in the Wiwaxy Cabin has been added and the entire meadow around the hut has been rehabilitated and reseeded. Over the past couple of years, the Huts Committee has worked very hard to restore the appearance of the hut as closely as possible to its original state. Pertains to trips taken to Jasper Park Lodge, Glacier Lake Camp, the Icefields Chalet, and Emerald Lake during the summer of 1940. Includes details of movies and photographs taken at the back of the diary. M67 / 2 - 2 : black leather diary, dated 41 in red paint (possibly ink) on the front cover. Pertains to trips to the Chateau Lake Louise. Twin Falls, and Emerald Lake taken during the summer of 1941. At least part of the summer was spent attending a motor car tour organized by Caroline Hinman. Also includes lists of names and addresses of other people who attended Hinman's tour, as well as details on milage and on films and photographs taken. M67 / 2 - 3 : black plastic 6-ring diary. Pertains to a collection of trip notes, mostly trips throughout the Canadian Rockies, from summer 1942 to summer 1945. Mostly consists of place names, people, and trip highlights - not much detail. M67 / 2 - 4 : black leather diary, dated 42 43 in red paint (possibly ink) on the front cover. Pertains to Alpine Club of Canada Camp at Consolation Lakes (July 19-24) and a stay at Deer Lodge at Lake Louise (Aug 16-22) in 1942, an informal ACC Camp at Lake O'Hara and a stay at Deer Lodge (Aug 16-18). For both summers she notes "In Browne House, Banff" which possibly could have been a home available for rent. Also includes details pertaining to the various costs of the trips (years not specified), the fish hatchery, a list of home movies from 1942, a list of stills (no date), and a list of equipment used at the ACC Camp in 1943. M67 / 2 - 5 : black leather diary, dated 44 45 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to trips taken by Lillian Gest during the summers of 1944 and 1945. 1944 includes travelling from Toronto to Banff, staying at the Browne House (presumably a guest house or other such rental property), annual Alpine Club of Canada Camp in Paradise Valley, Trial Riders of the Canadian Rockies trip to Fatique Pass and Eohippus Lake. 1945 inlcudes travelling from Toronto to Banff, staying at the Browne House, annual ACC Camp in Larch Valley, Sky Line Trail Hikers trip in Lake O'Hara (Aug 3-6), and a trip with A. Harmon [?] to graveyard cabin and Summet Pass. Also includes a list of people met during these trips, a list of equipment left in the Browne House (1944), trees local to the Canadian Rockies, and a small sketch of downtown Banff focussed around the Bow River Bridge. M67 / 2 - 6 : black leather diary, dated 46 47 in red paint on the front cover. Trips taken during the summer of 1946 include staying at the Chateau Lake Louise (June 29-July 12), Emerald Lake [Lodge?] (July 12-Aug 2), annual Alpine Club of Canada Camp in the Bugaboos (July 13-24), Mitchell Hut, Yoho (July 26-30), Banff (Aug 2-Sept 3), and Bow Lake (Aug 3-9). Trips in 1947 included time spent in Calgary during the Stampede, annual ACC Camp, pack trip organized by Caroline Hinman, and time spent around the town of Banff. Also includes list of people met during trips, and milage and details about trip from Banff to Merion (September 1947). Pertains to various trips taken during the summers of 1951 and 1952. 1951 includes travel from the Paoli, Pennsylvania to Banff, stays at the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise, a camp based in Lake O'Hara (possibly as part of the Alpine Club of Canada), a night spent at the residence of Aileen Harmons [?], a trip with the Sky Line Trail Hikers, and another stay at the Banff Springs Hotel. 1952 includes many trips involving stays at the Banff Springs Hotel and other luxury hotels in Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper, as well as trips with the ACC, the Sky Line Trail Hikers, and Caroline Hinman. Also includes lists of people met during both summers at various locations, highlights of Banff news (including the deaths of Hal Waterhouse and Col. Phillip Moore, marriages, construction work, and illnesses), lists of equipment, and telephone numbers. M67 / 3 - 4 : black leather diary, dated 53 54 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to a 1953 trip that started in Banff (with stay at Banff Springs Hotel) before going to Jasper where Lillian Gest participated in an Alpine Club of Canada Camp, then a few days in Lake O'Hara (staying in the lodge) before returning to Banff and then heading home to Pennsylvania. The summer of 1954 consisted of a motor car trip originating in Pennsylvania that worked west through Michigan, North Dakota, and Montana before reatching Banff. Also includes lists of mileages, people met during both summers, telephone numbers, information about flying with Air Canada (most likely in 1953), and the deaths of the Mexican tourists on Mt. Victoria, July 30, 1954. M67 / 3 - 5 : black leather diary, dated 54 55 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to the last few days of Lillian Gest's 1954 motor car trip, detailing the second half from Banff back to Pennsylvania and the 1955 trips to Banff, Mount Robson, the annual Alpine Club of Canada Camp, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara, and Vancouver. Pertains to the remainder of the summer 1975 trip (carried over from M67 / 5 - 6) and the first few months of the summer 1976 trip to the Canadian Rockies. Includes stays around the Banff, Lake Louise, and Lake O'Hara areas as well as hiking trips with and without the Sky Line Trail Hikers and the Alpine Club of Canada. Also includes a list of Lake O'Hara staff for 1975, reservation details for 1976, song lyrics, and lists of people met. M67 / 6 - 2 : black leather diary, dated July 26-1976 - Sept 8-1976 on fabric tape adhered to the front cover. Pertains to the remainder of the summer 1976 trip (carried over from M67 / 6 - 1) and contains details about club activity as part of the Alpine Club of Canada, various hikes, travel around the Canadian Rockies, and travel back to Pennsylvania. Also includes reservation details for 1977, names and phone numbers, people met, and information from a letter sent to Dr. Link from Edward Feuz in 1960 that included details about the Feuz family (including when they came to Canada and when they retired) and other matters relating to Lake O'Hara. M67 / 6 - 3 : black leather diary, titled June [illegible] - Sept 2-1977 on badly damaged fabric tape adhered to the front cover. Pertains to the summer 1977 trip to the Canadian Rockies with stays around the Banff, Lake Louise, and Lake O'Hara areas, hikes with and without the Sky Line Trail Hikers and the Alpine Club of Canada, and between Banff and Pennsylvania. Also includes birds seen at Lake O'Hara, lists of staffs and people met, and events from Banff in 1977 (including the construction of the Sundance Mall and Elizabeth Rummel's 80th birthday that March). M67 / 6 - 4 : black leather diary, titled June 21, 1978 to June 26, 1979 to Aug 5, 1979 on a piece of paper taped to the front cover. Pertains to the summer trips of 1978 and 1979 to the Canadian Rockies. Summer 1978 includes stays in the Banff, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara, and Field BC areas as well as many hiking trips with and without organizations like the Alpine Club of Canada and the Sky Line Trail Hikers. Summer 1979 includes stays in the Banff and Lake O'Hara areas, hiking trips, and travel between Banff and Pennsylvania by air. Also includes lists of staff names, phone numbers, and people met, histories and timelines for the Lake Louise area and Simpson's Ranch, distances, and events (including the marriage of Carole Harmon to Stephen Hutchings, summer 1978). M67 / 6 - 5 : black leather diary, titled August 5-25 1979 - Sun July 6-1980 to Aug 2 1980 on a piece of paper taped to the front cover. Pertains to the last few weeks of the summer 1979 trip (carried over from M67 / 6 - 4) and the summer 1980 trip. The summer 1980 trip included time spent in and around the Banff, Lake Louise, and Lake O'Hara areas, as well as hiking trips and details pertaining to travelling between Banff and Pennsylvania. Also includes detailed lists of equipment for 1980 &1981, a small list of notes (including selling prices for a book called "Mt. Assiniboine" written by Lillian Gest), and lists of people met. M67 / 6 - 6 : black leather diary, dated 1981 on an adhesive paper label torn in half. Pertains to first two weeks of July 1924 summer trip and summer 1981. Summer 1924 consists of early details for a trip organized by Caroline Hinman and mainly of lists of names of those included. Summer 1981 consists of time spent predominantly in and around the Lake Louise and Lake O'Hara areas, with shorter stays in Banff at the beginning and end of the trip. Also includes details of a climbing trip two people took over Wenkchemna Pass on Aug 9, lists of people met, staff of businesses around Banff, and telephone numbers. Also includes loose items consisting of notes to self, a postcard, a photograph, guest lists and itineraries for the Sky Line Trail Hikers, and newspaper clippings.
