History / Biographical: Mary Wright (Molly) Adams was born on 15 October 1868. in Ridgefield Connecticut. She was the third of five children born to Cornelia Ann Cook (1830-1902) and Daniel Lucius Adams (1814 - 1899) She died in Kobe, Japan on 23 January 1909 and was buried there.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of textual records, postcards, drawings and one photograph album pertaining to Mary (Molly) Wright Adams (1868-1909); transcripts of Molly's original letters which were compiled by Molly's sister, Catharine Elkin (nee Adams) between ca.1939 and 1941; and transcriptions of letters sent between Molly's extended family members [including members of the Adams, Cook and Wright families], ca.1844 and 1866. History / Biographical: John Adie grew up in St. Catharines, Ontario and moved to Calgary, Alberta ca.1911. Adie was a signmaker who had a workspace on 8th Avenue in Calgary and lived at the YMCA. In 1914 Adie and his three younger brothers, along with other members and residents of the Calgary YMCA joined the Canadian Army. John Adie and two of his brothers were killed in action.

History / Biographical: Walter Ashdown, 1890-1975, was a chauffeur at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Ashdown emigrated to Canada in 1904 and farmed for several years before becoming a private chauffeur, ca.1913, to prominent Calgarians prior to the First World War. He served as a dispatch rider and driver in France, returning to Canada in 1919. The following year he commenced employment with Brewster Transport Co., retiring ca.1970. During his long career, Ashdown was Brewster's chauffeur to celebrities, including royalty, politicians and actors. His 1930 drive of 81 miles in 82 minutes to deliver life-saving equipment to the Monarch Mine near Field, B.C. was widely publicized. In 1970, Ashdown received an award for one million accident-free miles.

History / Biographical: Willoughby John Astley, 1859-1948, came to Banff in 1888 and built the Beach House Hotel at Lake Minnewanka. He moved to Lake Louise in 1889. Brother, Charles D'Oyley Astley, 1849-1937, and Lucy Ann Astley continued to operate the hotel until 1907 when they retired to Banff. The hotel was destroyed as part of power development at Lake Minnewanka, ca.1912.

History / Biographical: Raphel (Ray) Bagley, 1880-1973, was a rancher and guide in the Red Deer, Onion Lake and Coleman districts of Alberta, Canada. Bagley came to the Lacombe district of Alberta in 1892. He homesteaded and ranched while guiding with the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies and conducting private trail rides throughout the southern Rockies from Waterton Lakes National Park to Banff National Park. Bagley wrote poems on western and trail riding themes, self-publishing a volume titled "Those Other Days" in 1969.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of poems in manuscript and published form, n.d., 1969; other textual material, n.d., 1926; photographs pertaining to the Bagley family, undated; and a sound recording of Bagley reading poems, ca.1970. History / Biographical: Sydney Baker, 1880-1948, was an outfitter and photographer at Banff, Alberta and Glacier, British Columbia, Canada. Baker married Elizabeth "Bessie" Simpson Walker in Banff, ca.1902. Syd Baker operated the Canadian Pacific Railway concession at Glacier House from 1905 until 1915, while Bessie had a curio tent there. Children, Muriel (1907-1976), Jack (1911-ca.1992) and Hiram (b.1914) accompanied the Bakers on a 1926 trip through Syd Baker's 1902 trapping / guiding territory. After 1915, Baker lived in Vancouver, where he operated a photography business and bookstore.

History / Biographical: Keno Balla, 1906-1993, worked in the transportation industry at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Balla was born and educated at Canmore and spent his early years in Bankhead. Balla worked at the Brett Sanitarium in Banff during the early 1920s and then for Brewster Transport at various times between 1925 and 1955, mainly driving tour buses and arranging, selling and dispatching tours. Balla played the trumpet in the Banff Citizens Band, ca.1924, and the Cascade Dance Hall band.

History / Biographical: Elliott Chappel Barnes, 1866-1938, was a rancher, outfitter and trail guide and professional photographer at Kootenay Plains, Banff and Jumping Pound, Alberta. Barnes was born in Rochester, New York in 1866. In the early 1890s he travelled throughout the American Rockies supporting himself as an itinerant photographer. In 1905, Barnes and his family immigrated to Canada and homesteaded on the Kootenay Plains. For a short time, Barnes ran a small outfitting operation out of Banff, mostly dealing with the newly-created Alpine Club of Canada and its members. Also, while wintering in Banff during 1907-1908, he worked briefly with Byron Harmon in the photographic business. Following this association, Barnes upgraded from a small "pocket" Kodak camera to a 5x7 Graflex with a stereo adaptor. Utilizing this camera, he published a set of stereo view-cards and custom postcards. In 1908, Barnes moved to a homestead at Little Jumping Pound Creek in the foothills west of Calgary and abandoned photography as a profession. After several farming ventures near Calgary, the family moved into the city, where Elliott Barnes died in 1938.

History / Biographical: The Beattie family were business owners at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Frank Beattie, 1855-1931, was in the hotel business in British Columbia in the 1880s and operated several hotels in Banff between ca.1887, when he bought the Hot Springs Hotel, and 1915. The Beattie Block, built in 1915, contained several businesses, including a pool hall, bowling alley and cafe. Following its destruction by fire in 1920, Frank Beattie and son Arthur operated the Hub Billiard parlor, cigar and news stand and restaurant until ca.1935. Arthur Beattie, 1892-1958, and Doris Cocayne Beattie, [1897]-1980, married in 1921 and raised four sons and one daughter in Banff. Doris Beattie was a Lifetime Charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, also a member of the Daughters of the Eastern Star and St. Paul's Presbyterian Church.

History / Biographical: Bill Waterworth (1922-2009) was born on Marten Street in Mrs. Thomson's nursing home in Banff. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of 18. On September 19, 1942, Waterworth was shot down over the French coast just short of completing his 33rd mission. Waterworth avoided capture by German patrols for two weeks before being captured and taken prisoner by the Gestapo. He was sent by boxcar to a Prisoner of War camp - Stalag VIIIB/344 - in Lamsdorf, Germany where he remained for three years.; In 1946, Bill married Bernice "Bern" Wilson (d. 2003), who was a granddaughter of Tom Wilson. Together they had three children, Lynn, Bunty, and Christie.

History / Biographical: Ulysses LaCasse (or Ulysse; or La Casse), 1888-1972, was a trail guide and national park warden at Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta, Canada. LaCasse came to Banff in 1908 and worked in various cooking jobs including trail cook for surveys and trail outfits. He guided Caroline Hinman's trail riding groups before joining the Canadian Army in Europe and Siberia. LaCasse accompanied Byron Harmon, Soapy Smith and Louis Freeman on their five hundred mile expedition through the Canadian Rockies, 1924. LaCasse was a long-time warden in the Castle Mountain and Lake Louise districts

History / Biographical: John Yates was a packer and outfitter in the Jasper, Alberta, Canada area. He was born in England in 1880 and educated in California, United States. In approximately 1906, he homestead near Lac Ste. Anne, west of Edmonton, Alberta and later had a homestead and coal mining lease near Brule Lake, Alberta. He packed supplies and carried mail for Grand Trunk Pacific Railway surveys and construction. From 1908 until ca.1920, Yates was an outfitter and guide for numerous mountaineering parties in the Mount Robson, British Columbia / Jasper, Alberta area. He established a reputation as an excellent mountaineer. Yates retired from outfitting and moved back to California, ca.1920.

History / Biographical: Marguerite Beryl Orr Rutherford (also known as Marguerite Orr), 1903-1993, was a businesswoman and outdoor enthusiast at Banff and Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She was the daughter of Lorne and May Orr and grand-daughter of Wesley Fletcher Orr, early mayor of Calgary. Marguerite Orr grew up in Banff, where she attended high school with Earle Birney. In 1927, she married Clyde "Rusty" Rutherford, from whom she was later separated. During WWII, Rutherford worked as a hospital assistant at Whitehorse, Yukon. She later owned Cottage Crafts in Calgary and sold Eskimo art, ca.1960, when it was just becoming popular. Rutherford was a close friend of Allen Bill, war correspondent and later editor and sports columnist for the Calgary Herald.
