- History / Biographical
- Iva (Stewart) Smith , 1894-1975, and Leonard James Smith, 1890-1969, were business operators at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Iva Stewart and her mother Zaidee Stewart, 1875-1962, came to Banff as visitors in 1913 and decided to stay. Iva operated the Canadian Pacific Railway station news stand from 1914 until ca.1924. She married Len Smith in 1922.
- After working at various other CPR facilities, including Lake Louise Chalet in the 1920s and Wapta Bungalow Camp, ca.1931, Iva Smith became manager of Becker's Bungalows on Tunnel Mountain in Banff, ca.1935 Len Smith worked at the Bow River boat house and was Captain of the "Lake Minnewanka" for over thirty years. He was also an ice-maker at Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge and Banff, Alberta for forty-five years. Zaidee M. Stewart worked at the boat operation tea house and wrote poetry, publishing "Banff Holiday" in 1950.

- Fonds consists of personal and professional papers of Iva Smith, 1904-1973, and of Len Smith, 1935-1963; personal papers of Zaidee Stewart, 1905-1950; Smith family photographs, ca.1890-ca.1960; also newsclippings, tourist information, other print material.
- Iva Smith papers include personal correspondence, 1904-1973, and business papers pertaining to the CPR news stand, 1914-1924. Len Smith professional papers pertain to his work as boat engineer. Zaidee Stewart papers include correspondence, diaries, poetry and papers re the publication "Banff Holiday."

Topics include New Years Eve activities and parties, day to day life, weather, painting/sketching [particularly Pete working on a piece to be auctioned in a fundraiser for the construction of a new Spitfire plane], books Catharine and Edith are reading, visits from friends and visitors, radio programs [mostly operas and the news], kitchen appliances and descriptions of meals, news pertaining to the war, updates on the construction of the new Lake Minnewanka dam, photography and cameras [including colour photography], Pete participating in drills as a reservist in the RCAF, ski trips to Mount Temple Lodge throughout February and March [includes helping improve ski runs and getting a sleigh for the tractor, guests at the lodge, evening conversations, clothing, and food], the Winter Carnival [including swim races by Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand Air Force members at the Cave and Basin], errand trips to Calgary, events and people in Concord, Edith's involvement with the Red Cross, wildlife, going on a road trip to Victoria in April [staying in Calgary, Creston, Grand Forks, and Vancouver on the way there and Lytton and Revelstoke on the way back], cleaning and household chores, and preparing for Edith and Mildred Owen to arrive for a visit at the end of June.

- Please note: language pertaining to Indigenous Peoplesand Japanese people used throughout is outdated and may be offensive. Letters are typed and hand-written. Many typed letters have hand-written notes and post scripts added throughout. Some are written on hotel/lodge letterhead. Some letters are marked with a small x in pencil, indicating where Jon Whyte made notes for use in his project "Catharine Robb Whyte, Peter Whyte: Commemorative Portfolio," originally published in 1981. 110 - 39 contains sketches of the 2-storey privy at a hotel in Cowley [?] and a corner decoration in their hotel room in Grand Forks.

Topics include Christmas and New Year's Eve activities and parties, day to day life, weather, the wedding of Edmee More and Charles Reid in January [also includes details on various showers and parties], visits from friends, matters pertaining to the the store and apartments on Banff Ave, events and people in Concord [including Russel's activities in the US Army], Catharine's involvement with the Red Cross, updates on war-time rations [mostly on food items and gasoline/coal], watching hockey games, books Catharine and Edith are reading, cleaning and household chores, news pertaining to the war [including black-out drills in Banff], the Banff Winter Carnival [including helping with the set-up, the parade and Carnival Queen, and events like races, ski jumping at Norquay, curling, and skijoring on the river], going to the movies, radio programs [mostly operas and the news], wildlife, various holidays [both Canadian and American], and various other Banff community activities.
