History / Biographical
Ernest Feuz, born 1889 in Interlaken, Switzerland was the son of Edouard Feuz Sr., one of two Swiss guides brought to Glacier House, B.C. in 1899 by the CPR. In 1909, the second generation of Swiss guides including Ernest Feuz and his two brothers Walter and Edward Jr., along with Rudolf Aemmer and Christian Hasler Jr. began guiding for the CPR during the summer months and returned to Switzerland for the winter. In 1912, Ernest settled at the Swiss village of Edelweiss, near Golden, B.C., constructed by the CPR in 1911. Glacier House closed in 1925 and Ernest Feuz began guiding primarily out of Lake Louise, the Swiss Guides Headquarters. During the winter months, the Swiss guides did maintenance work at Lake Louise and were responsible for maintaining the buildings and snow removal. Ernest Feuz led numerous climbing parties and rescue operations throughout his career, retiring from the CPR guiding service in 1954.

Second photograph album [ca.1910]-1954 has some later prints added by donors - up to 1976. History / Biographical
Ernst Niederer, 1891-1978, was an alpine ski and climbing guide at Jasper, Banff, Columbia Icefield and Lake Louise, Alberta. Niederer was born in Teufen, Switzerland and came to Canada in 1920. He began guiding in 1928 and was certified in 1940. He retired to Victoria in 1951, but continued to ski and teach. Niederer was survived by his wife Ivy and son Ernie.

Ethel Unwin, 1907-1970, was a business woman, guide and outfitter at Banff, Alberta and Glacier, B.C. Unwin worked at Glacier House and Banff in the gift shop and accommodation business. She was the first woman granted a trail guide's license and guided parties briefly during the First World War, maintaining an outfit owned by her brother, Sid Unwin. Between 1922 and 1947 she owned the Odd Craft Shop in Banff.

Allyn K. Ford (1878-1964) was a businessman and collector in Minneapolis, Minnesota and a member of the Alpine Club of Canada from 1908 onwards. He was married to Emily Powell Ford (1886-1976) and had at least two daughters, Alice Carpenter Ford and Nancy (Ford) Dart. Nancy also became a member of the ACC in 1953.

Frederick Archibald Brewster, 1883-1969, was an outfitter and guide at Jasper, Alberta, Canada. Brewster was born in Kildonan, Manitoba and in 1888 moved with his family to Banff, where he received his education. He subsequently attended St. John's College, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, obtaining a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering. Brewster worked briefly as a prospector and in 1910 embarked upon a long career as an outfitter and guide, first with Brewster and Moore. He established operations in Jasper in 1912 and was responsible for important parties, including those of Samuel Prescott Fay and the United States Biological Survey. Brewster served with distinction in the First World War and was involved with mountain warfare training of the Lovat Scouts in the Second World War. He supplemented his outfitting business with a series of camps which doubled as ski lodges: Fred Brewster's Rocky Mountain Camps, and boat concessions.

History / Biographical
Fred Stephens, 1869-1928, was an outfitter and guide in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. Stephens came to Banff in 1896, working first as a packer for Tom Wilson, and over the next few years guided numerous renowned mountaineers, including Walter Wilcox, Jean Habel, J. Norman Collie, Hugh Stutfield, James Outram, Stanley Washburn and A.L. Mumm. Stephens' operation was based in the Jasper-Yellowhead region. He retired from guiding ca.1920.

History / Biographical
Eben Fulton Dunsmore, 1905?-1943, was a skier and powerhouse operator at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Nova Scotia, Dunsmore came to Banff in 1909 with his parents, Thomas A. Dunsmore, 1876?-1966, and Jennie (Fulton) Dunsmore, d.1956. He also had a sister, Margaret, born ca.1910. An uncle, Arthur Wellesley Dunsmore, lived in Banff from 1910 until 1928. Dunsmore was married to Bessie Dunsmore at the time of his death at the age of thirty-eight. Fulton Dunsmore was an avid skier and hiker, and, with friends Peter Whyte, Cyril Paris and others, was one of the first to use the Mount Norquay area.

History / Biographical
The Galletly family were residents of Canmore and Banff, Alberta, Canada. David Drummond Galletly, 1838-1916, served as caretaker and guide for the Cave and Basin hot springs, 1897-ca.1910. Previously he worked on the construction of the Banff Springs Hotel and operated a hotel in Canmore. At the Cave and Basin, Galletly conducted tours and became known for his Scottish humor. Other family members included wife Ethel, daughters Viva and Ethel (Fulscher), son-in-law Fred Fulscher, and grandchildren Ronald and Adelina Fulcher.

History / Biographical
George Bain Sutherland, 1890-1974, was an athlete and civil servant at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Sutherland was born in Scotland and was a competitive boxer there. Following service in the First World War, he returned to Scotland and married Margaret (Peg) Menzies (d.1959). In 1923, the Sutherlands emigrated to Canada. Sutherland continued his boxing career here during the 1920s. He worked for the Federal Government in Banff in various positions, including bathhouse attendant at Cave and Basin for 16 years, and garage worker until retirement in 1954. He instructed swimmers, Banff Swimming Club members and boxers.

Personal, including personal and family, 1911-1959; war service, 1914-1919; biographical notes and diary, n.d., 1960; correspondence, 1957-1972; other papers; photographs. II. Sports, including boxing, 1912 -1960; swimming, 1935-1936; other papers, 1929, photographs. III. Financial, 1931-1969. The fonds reflects Sutherland's various activities as a soldier, boxer and swimmer and suggests the financial situation of an average government employee, 1940-1970.

George K. K. (Tommy) Link, 1887-1979, was professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Chicago, Illinois. Link spent many summers between 1928 and 1977 studying the Lake O'Hara region and building trails there, accompanied by his wife, Adeline Link, d.1943. The Links were frequently guided by Jim Boyce.

Fonds pertains to the Lake O'Hara region, particularly its history, geology, botany, trail systems and visitation.
I. Writing, research and translation, ca.1887-ca.1975, ca.45 cm, including some photographs. Consists of manuscript drafts, notes, correspondence, maps and print material pertaining to writing, editing and translation projects, including "The Ways of Lake O'Hara," and the "Map of Lake O'Hara Region South Area."

George McLean (Tatâga Mânî), 1871-1967, also known as Walking Buffalo, was a Stoney Chief and Moral Rearmament representative at Morley, Alberta, Canada. McLean was educated at Morley and Red Deer, Alberta, Canada and Winnipeg, Manitoba. He received his English name when "adopted" by Rev. John MacLean, who supported his education. A successful rancher, McLean was Chief of the Bearspaw Band, Stoney First Nation, from 1920 until 1935. In 1958, he became deeply involved in the Moral Rearmament Movement and made public appearance tours in England, Europe, New Zealand and Africa.

History / Biographical
George Noble, 1879-1965, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Noble was born in Woolwich, England where he apprenticed as a photographer. He came to Banff in 1909 to operate a photographic business for his uncles, George and Bill Fear, who owned a curio business. In 1919, Noble bought the photographic business and, in 1932, acquired the remainder of the Fear Brothers business. He built a new studio and shop, which offered portraiture, photo- finishing and framing services and sold photographic supplies, camera equipment and English china. In addition to portraiture, George Noble and employees, such as photographer Bill Jamieson, produced a wide range of documentary, scenic and commercial views. Noble's shop offered black and white and hand-coloured prints of local events and Rocky Mountain views. George Noble was an active member of the community, serving on both the Banff School Board and the Banff Board of Trade for many years. Upon his retirement in 1957, his business was acquired by a group of investors which included Bill Jamieson, lab-technician and photographer for the Noble business from 1936 to 1957

Pertains to Banff and area buildings, facilities, activities, events, such as Banff Winter Carnival and Banff Indian Days; Indigenous; scenic views of Banff and area and other Rocky Mountains locations.
II. Commercial views, 765 items; includes buildings, businesses, facilities, sports events, organizations, conventions, group portraits, displays and presentations.
III. Mixed views, 242 items; includes scenic, documentary and commercial views similar to material in previous series. Also includes some views know to have been produced by Fred Armbrister, a professional photographer who operated out of Lake Louise, Alberta, ca.1930.

Includes 36 colour stereo transparencies, ca.1955, re Administration Building and gardens, Banff-Jasper Highway scenics, mountain sheep, autumn colour, Banff Avenue, George Noble and staff. Also includes small number of commercial prints produced by Noble, including several large hand-painted views.
