- "For three years Voss and the Tilikum, aided by a rotating cast of characters, visited Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil and finally England, weathering heavy gales at sea and attracting large crowds of spectators on shore. The austere on-board conditions and simple navigational equipment Voss used throughout the voyage are a testimony to his skill and to the solid construction of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth vessel. It was originally called the Dewdney Trail and it ran from Hope, through Rock Creek and on to Wild Horse Camp, 6 miles northeast of Cranbrook. Today, with a few variations of route, it follows the old trail and has become in every sense of the word the New Dewdney Trail. In this, our seventh Frontier Guide, we are attempting to trace the story adn the history of both the old trail and the new , from Hope to Rock Creek. In companion volumes, we hope to complete the trail from Rock Creek to Salmo adn from Salmo to Wild Horse."

- "In the early days of British Columbia, the land lying along the American border from Rock Creek to Salmo was almost forgotten territory. In the beginning, the fur trade followed the lines of least resistance and these led southward by valley and river to United States soil. With the discovery of gold, copper and silver in the Boundary country, a subtle struggle between American and Canadian influence developed - each striving to draw a trade from the area. Over the years, the history of the region has been woven around the struggle between the powerful American magnet of roads and railroads to draw Boundary country into its orbit and the Canadian efforts to divert this traffic into an east-west pattern. The two major weapons in the hands of the Canadians were the Dewdney Trail of 1865 and the Kettle Valley Railroad. This, our eight Frontier Guide, is the attempt to portray the development of the Boundary country in relation to the roles played by the Dewdney Trail and the fabulous Kettle Valley Line."

- Iroquois principally from Caughnawaga, today's Kahnawa`:ke, were recruited now two centuries ago on a par with Whites to man the large canoes taking trade goods west from nearby Montreal, coming back with animal pelts. While some soon returned home, others stuck with the fur trade, yet others made their lives across the west so far as possible on their own terms. Their stories speak to Indigenous self-determination and self-sufficiency. The book tracks four Iroquois clusters or bands across time, place, and generations. Set down among Montana Flatheads, Iroquois responded to their host's desire for the Catholicism they brought with them from Quebec by four expeditions to St. Louis in search of a Jesuit missionary, who no sooner arrived than lost interest, leaving Iroquois once again to mentor their hosts. The fur trade's economic imbalance impelled a second group, whose words quite remarkably survive as they were spoken, to overturn the status quo to the advantage of employees, they themselves engaging the American west. A third group opted for the Pacific Northwest fur trade, those doing so on the American side of a border put in place in 1846 discovering their long service mattered for naught when they sought to settle among their White counterparts, those in British territory faring somewhat better. Repeatedly lauded in travelers' accounts, a fourth cluster was displaced on their homeland becoming Jasper National Park, again on their new locale an Alberta boom town, yet still today self-identify as Iroquois.

- As a teenager, Kate Harris realized that the career she most craved—that of a generalist explorer, equal parts swashbuckler and metaphysician—had gone extinct.
