History / Biographical: The Wardle family was comprised of husband and wife, James Morey Wardle (June 26,1888 - May 18,1971) and Maud Leette (Roney) Wardle (May 24,1889 - December 1,1969), and their one child, Dorothy Hope Wardle (May 23,1919 - July 20,2003). James Wardle, born in Chiliwack, British Columbia, was a civil engineer and public servant. He was the Superintendent of Banff National Park from 1918-1921, Chief Engineer for Parks Canada from 1921-1935, and Deputy Minister of the Interior from 1935-1936. He is primarily known as a highway design engineer, particularly for building the Banff-Windermere, Banff-Lake Louise, and Banff-Jasper highways. He was a councillor for the Municipality of Rockcliffe Park in Ontario and he was the President of the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies in Banff from 1925-1929. Mount Wardle in Vermillion was named after him in 1921. James married Leette on November 4, 1913, with whom he had one child, Dorothy. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Dorothy (also known as Dot and Dorie) grew up in Banff, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario, due to her father's position with the federal government. She was educated at the Mountain School in Banff and at the Elmwood School in Ottawa. All three family members were graduates of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. James graduated in 1912 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Leette graduated with a Bachelor's degree, and in 1942, Dorothy also earned a Bachelor's degree. Dorothy was prominent in student life and active in athletics. In 1941, Dorothy became the first woman elected as President of the Alma Mater Society and during her academic career, Dorothy was a member of the Levana Intercollegiate Debative, University Centenary Committee, and Queen’s War Aid Commission. Dorothy spent her career as a freelance writer however, upon graduation she served as the first Secretary-In-Charge of Records at Carleton College (now Carleton University) from 1942-1944 in Ottawa and in the mid-1950s worked as a secretary for the Glenbow Foundation in Calgary. Dorothy pursued a lifelong interest in traveling, art, and antiques. Although she was fiercely proud and protective of Banff and the Park, and remained a volunteer and patron of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, Dorothy eventually settled in Sidney, British Columbia and shared an apartment with Sheila Iris Ritchie, with whom Dorothy travelled extensively. After her death in 2003, Dorothy, "Dorie," was laid to rest alongside her parents in the Old Banff Cemetery.

Series IV: Travel, 44.5 cm, ca.1950-1988 (includes hand-written notebooks meticulously detailing their travels).; V75 consists of two series, 79.5 cm, ca. 1912-2001. Series I: Wardle Family, ca. 1912-1971, 6 albums, 31 cm of photograph prints and negatives (including family trips, trail rides in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and family gatherings). Series II: Dorothy Wardle, 1972-2001, 34 cm of photograph prints, negatives, and transparencies (including Dorothy's travels in Alberta and British Columbia, overseas, and various outings with friends).

History / Biographical: The Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies is a trail riding organization based in Calgary, Alberta. The organization was established in 1923 with the support of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The first ride was held in 1924, and annual summer trail rides and pow-wows attracted fifteen hundred members by 1929. Many notable residents of the Bow Valley, including members of the Brewster and Moore families, Catherine Robb and Peter Whyte, and Carl Rungius have participated in trail rides. Support from the Canadian Pacific Railway ended in 1961. As of 2020, the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies remains an active organization. History / Biographical: Allan E. Crawford (1900-1989) of Calgary, Alberta and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, was a member of the Sky Line Trail Hikers from 1937 to 1946 and was the "Official Musician of the Sky Line Trail Hikers" in 1937, 1938, 1940, and 1941. He also participated in Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies trips from 1937, 1938, 1940, 1941 as their musician. Allan E. Crawford appeared on Calgary radio station CFCN "The Voice of the Prairies" on a live weekly program, with the music trio "The Gamboliers" playing the accordian with Eddie Clemens on guitar and J.E. Gerke on vocals. Allan also played the organ, piano and harmonica.

Scope & Content: File pertains to a photograph album depicting trips taken by Lillian Gest, usually during the summer, from 1934-1937. The 1934 trip was part of the Alpine Club of Canada Annual Camp in northern Jasper National Park - starting in the Eremite Mountain area and working east towards Mount Edith Cavell. Also includes a few photographs of mountains around the Banff town area. The 1935 trip was part of the ACC Annual Camp in the Mt. Assiniboine and East Kootenay areas. Also includes newspaper clippings pertaining to Club activities and greeting cards from Club members. The photographs associated with the Yoho Icefields from Bow Lake trip are most likely from the summer of 1936 based on greeting cards labelled as such, but very few of the photographs themselves are annotated. The remainder of the album is dedicated to the 1937 trips to Mt. Trident, Mt. Bryce, the Columbia Icefield area, Bryce and Zion, Utah, the Boulder Dam, Arizona, and Colorado. Also includes Christmas cards from 1937 from various friends and Club members. Scope & Content: File pertains to a photograph album depicting the 1930 Summer Trip to Switzerland and England (including Geneva, Grindelwald, Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Lucerne, Basle, Grasmere, and Keswick), a camping/horseback trip in July 1931, and the annual Alpine Club of Canada Camp in August 1931. The 1930 Summer Trip started in Switzerland before moving over to England and was most likely a Gest family vacation. Includes photographs taken by Lillian Gest and her travel companions as well as purchased souvineer photographs. Also includes various greeting cards. The July 1931 trip consisted of travel mainly on horseback throught the Mt. Assiniboine area into Wolverine Pass, organized by Caroline Hinman and corresponds with the insert. Due to the limited number of pages dedicated to this trip, it is possibly Lillian Gest only attended part of it before connecting with the Alpine Club of Canada Annual Camp. The Annual Alpine Club of Canada Camp (called the Canadian Alpine Club by Gest), July 21 to August 2, 1931 took place throughout the Lake O'Hara and Prospector's Valley regions of British Columbia. Photographs include scenic views, camps, horses, wildlife, group portraits, Fay Hut, glaciers, and various club activities. Also includes greeting cards from various people who went on trips. Includes scenic views, horses, camps, portraits, and two pages dedicated to the Hinman Party in August - it is not clear if Lillian Gest participated in the whole of Caroline Hinman's summer 1932 trip. At the Alpine Club Camp depicts the ACC Annual Camp for 1932, based in Glacier, BC. Includes the ACC camp, mountains, glaciers, portraits, scenic views, climbing, swimming, Abbot Pass Hut, Glacier Circle Cabin, enlargements, and greeting cards. Following the annotated ACC trip photographs are a collection of greeting cards, newspaper clippings, and misc. photographs from Gest's various trips during the summer of 1932. Most of these photographs are not annotated. Also includes greeting cards from trip members and a memorial card for Conrad Kain fixed to the inside back cover. History / Biographical: Charlie Hunter (1888-1982) of Pincher Creek, Alberta, worked as a guide for Jim Boyce in the 1920s and 1930s, and was especially associated with Caroline Hinman's tours. Don Schoening (1918-2018), Charlie Hunter's nephew, worked as a wrangler for his uncle on Hinman's trail rides in Banff National Park in 1934 and 1936. Schoening also ran the pack trains that carried the building supplies for Skoki Lodge in 1936.

Scope & Content: Album contains ca.211 black and white photographs pertaining to backcountry trail rides through the Canadian Rockies (1930s), belonging to guide Charlie Hunter. Individuals in the photographs include Caroline Hinman and Lillian Gest. [Canada Goose] This is the name of the wild goose that flied far above our heads Fall and Spring, traveling north or south in great flocks shaped like an immense V. At the head is a leader who knows the way well. As it is harder work to lead than to follow, this bird is replaed by another pilot and permitted to rest, ready to come back fresh to relieve the goose there. It is not often they can be seen on the ground, as they are known better from the noisy honking that fills the sky as the flock passes. They are beautiful brids, gray bodies, with black necks and heads decorated with a white chin strap. They are said to grow quite tame, even become pets; but they are cautious, and you will not touch them without starting a fight. They are known to live as long as fifty years, mating early and remaining true to each other for life. Always a favourite, poems have been written about them, and to them.
