- Willoughby John Astley, 1859-1948, came to Banff in 1888 and built the Beach House Hotel at Lake Minnewanka. He moved to Lake Louise in 1889. Brother, Charles D'Oyley Astley, 1849-1937, and Lucy Ann Astley continued to operate the hotel until 1907 when they retired to Banff. The hotel was destroyed as part of power development at Lake Minnewanka, ca.1912.

- The Beattie family were business owners at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Frank Beattie, 1855-1931, was in the hotel business in British Columbia in the 1880s and operated several hotels in Banff between ca.1887, when he bought the Hot Springs Hotel, and 1915. The Beattie Block, built in 1915, contained several businesses, including a pool hall, bowling alley and cafe. Following its destruction by fire in 1920, Frank Beattie and son Arthur operated the Hub Billiard parlor, cigar and news stand and restaurant until ca.1935. Arthur Beattie, 1892-1958, and Doris Cocayne Beattie, [1897]-1980, married in 1921 and raised four sons and one daughter in Banff. Doris Beattie was a Lifetime Charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, also a member of the Daughters of the Eastern Star and St. Paul's Presbyterian Church.

- Charlie Beil, 1894-1976, was an artist at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Beil pursued his interest in art after meeting artist Charlie Russell in Glacier Park, Montana, USA. Prior to that, he worked as a cowboy and served in the U.S. Cavalry. Beil came to Banff in 1930 and settled there permanently in 1934. He established a studio and began to produce murals, dioramas and bronze sculptures. Beil was well-known for the latter and was active as an artist until his death. Charles Beil married Olive Luxton (1915-1983), ca.1940.

- James (Jim) Hawkins Boyce, 1892-1982, was a guide, outfitter, log builder and businessman at Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta, Canada. Dorothy Boyce was a pharmacist and business woman at Calgary, Quebec and Banff, Canada.
- Jim Boyce was the son of Joseph Boyce, 1856-1927, and stepson of Wilma "Josephine" Boyce, 1866-1952, of Banff, Alberta. In 1911, Jim joined his father building trails. His guiding and outfitting career began with Jimmy Simpson's outfit as a trail cook. During the 1920s Boyce formed his own outfit with Max Brooks and went on to guide prominent clients Carl Rungius, Caroline Hinman and her parties, George and Adeline Link and William D. Cox of Chicago, USA.
- In addition to guiding and outfitting, Jim Boyce worked with motion picture companies on location in the Rockies with his dog teams during the 1920s. A number of well-known log buildings are testament to his log-building skills, including Skoki, Mount Temple Lodge and the Lake Louise Ski Lodge. During the 1930s, Boyce managed and expanded Skoki Lodge. He also supervised road construction on the Banff-Jasper Highway and the Alaska Alcan Military Highway for the U. S. Army during the Second World War and operated the Bar C Ranch (for William D. Cox) for many years. Boyce made his home in Banff.
- Dorothy Frances Llewellyn (Whiteman) Boyce, 1901-2001, was the daughter of Rev Arthur Wellesley Richard Whiteman, 1865-1926, and Nina L. Whiteman, 1873-1956. After studying pharmacy at the University of Alberta, Dorothy came to Banff in 1922 to work for Dr. Brett. She subsequently studied at the University of Toronto, Ontario; worked at the Calgary General Hospital, Alberta, from 1926 to 1940; and during the Second World War, worked as a chemist in Quebec, Canada. After the death of her first husband, Tronson James Draper, 1879-1949, an oilman of Calgary, Alberta, Dorothy became a permanent resident of Banff. She owned and operated Travellers Digest in Banff and married Jim Boyce in 1957.

- James Irvine Brewster, 1882-1947, came to Banff with his parents in 1888. While still boys, he and his brother Bill started guiding fishing parties and later formed an outfitting partnership. With silent partners Fred Hussey and Phil Moore, they established Brewster Brothers in 1904. Jim Brewster and Hussey left the business in 1906. In 1909, Jim returned to guide the business. Under his control, it became a major transportation supplier, Brewster Transport Company. Fern Brewster, 1902-1967, daughter of Jim Brewster and Lade Brewster (d.1915), was a sportswoman, businesswoman and homemaker. She was involved in the operation of Sunshine ski area and was a director of Brewster Transportation after her father's death. Fern Brewster's married names were Clarkson and Dooley. Adele (Dell) Brewster (Sibbald), 1896-1983, Jim Brewster's second wife, was also a director of Brewster Transportation.

James Irvine Brewster papers and photographs, before 1948 and ca.1959, consist mainly of professional papers and photographs relating to guiding and outfitting activities, and to Brewster Transport Company records, including Sunshine ski area records. Series includes correspondence, diaries, legal papers, Sunshine Lodge addition papers, Brewster house plans and other material. Correspondence is incoming and outgoing letters between Brewster and Hussey, clients, and associates regarding guiding and outfitting, real estate speculation and personal matters, etc. 1906-1907. Diaries pertain to guiding, hunting and horse trips, 1897-1901, 1904-1906; entries mainly record clients, territory covered and game observations and records. - Belmore Browne, d.1954, was a well-known artist who lived and worked at Banff and Seebe, Alberta, Canada and in the United States. Browne and Agnes Evelyn Sibley, 1882-1976, were married in 1913. In 1921, they bought property in Banff for a summer home and with their children, George, 1918-1958, and Evelyn, 1915-1994, travelled extensively throughout the 1920s and 1930s in pursuit of subjects for Belmore Browne's paintings. In 1946, the Brownes built a home near Seebe. Agnes Browne was a diarist for the family and much of her extensive writing centres around the career of Belmore Browne. Her daughter Evelyn consolidated the diaries in the 1980s. George Browne was also an artist.

Included are trips to Red Earth Creek, Skoki, Mystic Lake, Sawback Lake, Red Deer Valley, Hector Lake, Bow Lake, Kananaskis Valley, Cascade and Panther rivers, Elbow Pass, and other locations. Other diaries cover the years 1943 to 1954, years partly spent at Seebe until Belmore Browne's death. Diary copies and typescripts have been annotated by Evelyn Browne.
- Posters on alpine and wilderness survival, ca.1942, were done by Belmore Browne for the American military's Arctic Training Program.
- Photographs are mainly photographic copies of paintings by Belmore and George Browne produced by Peter A. Juley & Son, Photographers of Fine Arts, New York, ca.1955, 79 items. - James Gordon Burles, b.1949, is a poet, surveyor and civil servant at Banff, Alberta, Canada. A native of Banff, Burles is a student of the Canadian Rockies. In Burles' own words, much of his poetry is inspired by four environments: the life and history of Banff National Park, the town of Banff, the Okanagan Valley, and Calgary.
- Scope & Content
- Fonds consists mainly of poems by Gordon Burles, 1970-2017. Manuscripts contain about twenty-seven hundred poems, mainly in free verse, some with revisions. Poems are numbered in chronological order. About 2016 Burles stopped numbering each poem. The year of creation is indicated with each poem. Some poems pertain to mountain personalities such as Bill Peyto, Norman Sanson, Margaret Stone, Walter D. Wilcox, Walter J. Phillips, Conrad Kain, and Georgia Engelhard. Many are surrealist or nonsense poems and many deal with the Cemetery Tea House, an imaginary teahouse frequented by various characters.
- Fonds consists of three series: I : Poetry Manuscripts; II : Prose and research; III: Digital typeset copies of published poems
- Some poems deal with Burle's parents and family. The collection also holds fifty-three books and booklets, self-published by the author from 1984 to 2017. The books published from 2003 to 2017 contain all the poems which the author considers worth preserving. Some in one book have been revised in a later book. Some poems were revised more than once. The three books published in 1984, 1986, and 1990 are considered by the author as early works. Only the poems in those books that the author considered worth publishing have been republished in the 2003-2017 books. Names in the poem titles are usually made up.
- Some titles are tongue-in-cheek. There were so many poems that the author resorted to names like "Portrait for Bertrand Clerihew-Guggenheim" to make it easier. Some titles, of course, are obviously connected to the content of the poem. Many titles were long enough to preclude the difficulty of getting the graphic designer to centre the title over the poem! Also included are manuscripts, research materials, articles, and notes etc. regarding Bill Peyto, the Copper Mountain Mine, Banff National Park museum, logging roads in the Johnson Lake area, and the Sanson-Bethune connection.
- Photographs pertain to remains of hay rake and wagon in the Third Vermilion Lake area (1975) and remains of the Queen of the Hills Mine, above Silver City (1977).
- CD-ROMS's contain typeset copies of manuscripts by Gordon Burles in Pagemaker, In Design and .pdf file formats. Carr, an English immigrant, began working for Brewster Transport Co. at Lake Louise in 1910. He worked as a pony-boy around Lake Louise and began leading pack train trips. Rev. Dr. S. Knapp, Worcester, Massachusetts was a client for thirty years. Carr later operated the Half Diamond M ranch near Tete Jaune Cache, B.C.

- Jack Carter, 1936-1989, worked for the Alberta Forest Service for ca.18 years as radio operator, lookout operator and finally as Chief Fire Detection Officer. Carter was active in the Rocky Mountain Ramblers. He travelled widely and spent time working in Crete, Australia and New Zealand doing geological and archaeological work.

- Dorothy Cranstone, 1904-1996, was a businesswoman and hotel worker at Banff, Alberta. Cranstone worked at the Banff Springs Hotel, 1929-1940, as Assistant Housekeeper, and later as Housekeeper at the Mount Royal Hotel. She went on to operate a gift shop in the Mount Royal Hotel. For many years, Cranstone was companion to Pearl (Brewster) Moore and later to Pat Brewster. She also worked for the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies as custodian of the Moore Home and as museum hostess.

- Textual records include cards and letters from Peter and Catharine Whyte, 1947-1966; visitors to the Moore House, 1975-1981; Moore House visitors book, 1974-1983; transcript of Philip Moore 1903 trip diary (holograph and typescript) by Dorothy Cranstone; clippings, 1937-1983, re Pat Brewster, Dorothy Cranstone, Mount Royal Hotel fire and Jim Brewster home; ephemera regarding events attended by Cranstone, including Royal Visit to the Banff Springs Hotel, 1939, Gracie Fields Concert at the Banff Springs Hotel, 1940, and H. R. H. Princess Margaret Rose's visit, 1958. Textual records also include business/financial records for the gift shop operated by Cranstone, 1949-1974; records related to the publication and distribution of Pat Brewster's books, 1983-1987; correspondence records, 1962-1996; legal and business records concerning power of attorney as well as the dispersal of Cranstone's property and estate, 1980-1998.
