History / Biographical: Edward Feuz Jr., 1884-1981, was a Canadian Pacific Railway mountain guide at Lake Louise, Alberta and Glacier and Golden, British Columbia, Canada. Feuz was the son of one of the first Swiss Guides brought to Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway. He climbed at Field and Glacier House in 1903 with his father and guided during summers from 1905 to 1912, settling that year in the Edelweiss Village at Golden, British Columbia. Until his retirement in the 1950s, he accompanied the finest climbers and was involved in over seventy first ascents of peaks over 3048 metres.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of photographs, 1911-ca.1958; professional papers, 1901-1957; letters, 1941-1961; scrapbook, 1923-1972; and newsclippings, 1969.; Photographs pertain mainly to mountaineering trips and climbs, mainly led by Edward Feuz Jr. in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, and includes many first ascents. Many photographs were taken by clients who sent copies to Feuz. Photographs also pertain to clients, associates and friends, Lake Louise Chalet and Chateau Lake Louise, Lake Louise area, Feuz homes at Edelweiss and Golden, and scenic views in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains. Negatives are largely unidentified. Original colour transparencies by Edward Feuz, ca.1950-ca.1976, pertain to trips and scenic views in the Rocky Mountains. ; Professional papers include: Feuz's fuhrer-buch (guidebook) containing his certification as a Swiss Guide and testimonials from clients in Switzerland and Canada, 1901-1957; certificate of life membership, Alpine Club of Canada, 1947; and records of climbs re the Chateau Lake Louise, 1913-1930. History / Biographical: Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rummel, 1897-1980, was a lodge owner and operator at Banff National Park, Alberta and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada. Rummel was born Elisabeth von Rummel to an aristocratic German family. With her mother and sisters, she ranched near Millarville, Alberta, after being stranded there during the First World War. In 1938, Lizzie moved to the mountains and became involved in early ski and backcountry operations. Her forty-two year career in the mountains included: working at Mount Assiniboine Lodge until 1942; managing Skoki Lodge and, at various times, Temple Chalet and Lake Louise Ski Lodge, ca.1943-1950; owning and operating Sunburst Lake Camp, 1950-1970; and working as assistant and oral history interviewer at the Archives of the Canadian Rockies (now the Archives of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies) from 1966 to 1980. Lizzie was active in the town affairs of Canmore, Alberta, where she lived, as well as in various conservation and recreation organizations. She became a member of the Order of Canada in 1980.

History / Biographical: Erling Strom, 1897-1986, was a skier and lodge-owner who lived at Mount Assiniboine, British Columbia, Canada; New York and Vermont, USA; and Norway. Norwegian-born Strom pioneered cross-country skiing in the United States and the Canadian Rockies. He operated Mount Assiniboine Camp from 1928 until the 1970s. Strom's mountain expertise was critical to the success of the Lindley-Liek expedition which conquered Mount McKinley, Alaska in 1932. His autobiography "Pioneers on skis" describes his career as a ski instructor and lodge operator.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of mainly of textual records in the form of scrapbook, 1932-1963; and publications, n.d. 1952-1978, pertaining to skiing, Mt. Assiniboine Lodge and region. Publications include issues of Strom's newsletter, "The Assiniboine wrangler."; Also includes: "To the top of the continent" by Frederick A. Cook, 1908, a published account of Cook's fraudulent first ascent of Mount McKinley, heavily annotated by Belmore Browne who refuted Cook's claim in 1909; and a letter from Lieutenant Colonel H. Westmorland of Keswick, Cumberland, to Mr. Randow, 1970 April 9, outlining Westmorland's skiing and climbing career in the Canadian Rockies.; Also includes Mount Assiniboine Camp log book compiled by Erling Strom (entries range from 1933-1963); Photographs pertain to Erling Strom, family, friends, associates, homes; camps, including Mount Assiniboine Camp; trips and expeditions, including expedition to Mount McKinley. History / Biographical: Ernest C. W. Lamarque, 1879-1970, was a surveyor, map maker, writer and artist at Vancouver and Oyama, British Columbia, Canada. Lamarque was born in Kent, England and emigrated to the United States in 1896, travelling to Winnipeg in 1897. He worked for the Hudson's Bay Company as a fur trader at Isle a la Crosse, Fort Simpson, Fort McKay and Fort Chipewyan before entering the surveying field in 1907. His survey work took him throughout British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon. In 1933-1934, he was in charge of the advance party reconnaissance for the Bedaux Subarctic Expedition. He was also involved in Alaska Highway, Royal Canadian Air Force and Whitehorn Mountain ski lift surveys.

History / Biographical: Allyn K. Ford (1878-1964) was a businessman and collector in Minneapolis, Minnesota and a member of the Alpine Club of Canada from 1908 onwards. He was married to Emily Powell Ford (1886-1976) and had at least two daughters, Alice Carpenter Ford and Nancy (Ford) Dart. Nancy also became a member of the ACC in 1953.

History / Biographical: Frances Kathleen Montgomery, 1904-1989, and Esme Gabrielle (Gaie) Neufville Taylor, 1910-1994, met during their service in the Canadian Women's Army Corps during the Second World War. After the war they shared a house in London and Waterloo, Ontario. Montgomery was a university professor in Romance languages; Taylor worked as a secretary and writer. Montgomery retired in 1971 and the women moved to Victoria, B.C. They were avid photographers, gardeners, readers, climbers and campers. Montgomery and Taylor travelled throughout Ontario and west to Alberta, B.C. and the United States. They attended several Alpine Club of Canada camps between 1959 and 1969

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of three series: I. Photographs, 1929-1976; II. Motion pictures, 1936-1964; III. Textual records, 1959-1994. Photographs and films pertain mainly to travel and camping in Europe, Ontario, western Canada and the United States. ACC camps in the Bugaboos, 1959, Fryatt Creek, 1960, Maligne Lake, 1962, and others are documented. Montgomery appears to have made the 35 mm photographs and the films, while Taylor appears to have made the 127-format negatives and superslide transparencies. Textual items are a letter and newsclippings on climbing

History / Biographical: Fred C. Bell, 1883-1971, was a physician, hospital administrator, mountaineer and officer of the Alpine Club of Canada. He lived at Winnipeg, Manitoba and Vancouver, British Columbia. Marcella E. Bell was also a mountaineer and Alpine Club member.

History / Biographical: John Hartefeld was born Johann Hartefeld in 1915 in Stettin, Poland (Germany). He studied physical education and manual arts from 1930 to 1933 and taught at a boys school in Berlin-Spandau from 1939 to 1945. Hartefeld moved to Garmish Partenkirchen, Germany where he worked as a ski instructor, sports teacher and faltboat (watercraft) instructor and guide.; Gertrud Vinzenzia Sattler was born in 1920 in Wilkischen, Czechoslovakia and attended business college and language school in Prague, earning a certificate as a bilingual secretary in English and German. From 1945 to 1953 Gertrud Sattler worked for the U.S. Army in Garmish Partenkirchen as a secretary, bookkeeper and interpreter. She met John Hartefeld in Garmish Partenkirchen and together they immigrated to Canada in 1953 and settled in Toronto, Ontario.; Gertie and John married in Toronto in 1953 and moved to Banff, Alberta settling at 213 Bear Street. In 1963, John and Gertie moved into their new home at 340 Muskrat Street, a house built by John. John Hartefeld earned his Alberta Journeyman's Certificate in Carpentry in 1958 and completed his B.Ed in Industrial Arts in the Faculty of Education in 1966 by attending summer schools and through correspondence courses with Queen's University and the University of Calgary. He taught at the Banff High School from 1957 to 1979 and was instrumental in designing and assembling the industrial arts shop at the Banff High School in 1962. John Hartefeld gave ski lessons to school-age students at Mount Norquay and he designed and built the wrought iron chandeliers and wall lamps in his home and also at the Bugaboo, Cariboo, and Bobbie Burns lodges. John enjoyed fishing, windsurfing, and building his own windsurfing boards for sailing at Vermillion Lakes. John Hartefeld died in a bicycle accident on Norquay Road in June 1997.; From 1953 to 1959 Gertie worked for J.D. Hansen of Banff doing insurance, real estate and legal work. From 1959 to 1964 Gertie worked for Dermod Owen-Flood, Barristers and Solicitors as a legal secretary and bookkeeper and from 1963 to 1966 she worked for Nesbitt, Beaumont et al. Barristers and Solicitors. Gertie provided secretarial and bookkeeping services for Rocky Mountain Guides (now CMH) from 1966 to 1968 and from 1962 to 1975, she worked as an insurance and real estate agent and was an officer of Banff Insurance Services Ltd. In 1975, Gertie became an insurance consultant for CMH. Gertie Hartefeld enjoyed skiing, fishing, cooking, and tennis. She was an accomplished weaver and a member of the Harvie Heights Weavers Guild. Her garments could be purchased at The Quest in Banff. Gertie Hartefeld died in 2002.

History / Biographical: Glenn Tooke, 1930-1996, moved to Banff, Alberta from Edmonton with his wife Shirley in 1961. Glenn managed Banff Camera, Rundle Photo and Cascade Studio and in 1964, he and Shirley purchased the Banff A&W. In 1969, they opened and operated the restaurant Joshua's, in partnership with Werner Peschl and in 1970, they opened an art gallery that showcased Alberta artists and offered custom framing. During this time, Glenn and Rob Lefroy rented the Banff Avenue Auditorium (presently Parks Canada Information Centre) and held public dances with live bands on the weekends. In 1979, Shirley and Bob Kinzie established a professional theatre company called Any Space Theatre. With contract actors, musicians and playwrights, they presented their plays in many locations within Banff, Lake Louise, Calgary, and Edmonton. Glenn assisted in designing and building the sets, and provided all the photography for promoting the productions. Having divided their time between Banff and Calgary during the 1970s and early 1980s, Glenn and Shirley permanently settled in Banff in 1984 and re-established their gallery. In 1986, they opened Jump Start, a specialty coffee shop. Shirley and Glenn have two children, Robert and Tamara.

History / Biographical: Hans Gmoser, 1932-2006 was born in Braunau, Austria in 1932. During his long career he worked as a mountain guide, mountaineer, ski instructor, skier, cinematographer, lecturer, and founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Canadian Mountain Holidays. Hans Gmoser was also an active cyclist and was based in Banff and Harvie Heights, Alberta.; Gmoser gained early skiing and mountaineering experience in post-war Austria before emigrating to Canada with his friend Leo Grillmair in 1951. Lizzie Rummel gave him his first job in the mountains at Mount Assiniboine. By 1953 he was working as a mountain guide and founded Rocky Mountain Guides Ltd. (Canadian Mountain Holidays CMH) in 1957. That year he began filming promotional films containing climbing and skiing adventure sequences. He first used fixed-wing aircraft and later helicopters, starting in 1963, to transport clients for spring skiing and summer climbing. Gmoser toured throughout North America promoting his skiing and climbing films, attracting large audiences with his inspiring lectures.; Gmoser built Bugaboo Lodge in 1968, the first of six lodges which also include Bobbie Burns, Galena, Gothics, Adamants and Cariboo lodges, to serve international heli-skiers and heli-hikers. Gmoser retired from Canadian Mountain Holidays in 1993. Hans Gmoser received honourary memberships in the Alpine Club of Canada and the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations. He was elected to the Honour Roll of Canadian Skiing and the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and received the Banff Mountain Film Festival Summit of Excellence Award. In 1987 Hans Gmoser was awarded the Order of Canada.

History / Biographical: J. Monroe "Roy" Thorington, 1894-1989, was an ophthalmologist, mountaineer and mountain historian at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Thorington was a pre-eminent climber and explorer in the Canadian Rockies starting in 1922. He studied the Freshfield and Lyell Glaciers for 22 years and explored and mapped the Purcell Range, British Columbia. Thorington wrote approximately 300 publications on mountaineering, mountain history and the Canadian Rockies. He was active in numerous organizations, particularly the American Alpine Club.

History / Biographical: James (Jim) Hawkins Boyce, 1892-1982, was a guide, outfitter, log builder and businessman at Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta, Canada. Dorothy Boyce was a pharmacist and business woman at Calgary, Quebec and Banff, Canada.; Jim Boyce was the son of Joseph Boyce, 1856-1927, and stepson of Wilma "Josephine" Boyce, 1866-1952, of Banff, Alberta. In 1911, Jim joined his father building trails. His guiding and outfitting career began with Jimmy Simpson's outfit as a trail cook. During the 1920s Boyce formed his own outfit with Max Brooks and went on to guide prominent clients Carl Rungius, Caroline Hinman and her parties, George and Adeline Link and William D. Cox of Chicago, USA.; In addition to guiding and outfitting, Jim Boyce worked with motion picture companies on location in the Rockies with his dog teams during the 1920s. A number of well-known log buildings are testament to his log-building skills, including Skoki, Mount Temple Lodge and the Lake Louise Ski Lodge. During the 1930s, Boyce managed and expanded Skoki Lodge. He also supervised road construction on the Banff-Jasper Highway and the Alaska Alcan Military Highway for the U. S. Army during the Second World War and operated the Bar C Ranch (for William D. Cox) for many years. Boyce made his home in Banff.; Dorothy Frances Llewellyn (Whiteman) Boyce, 1901-2001, was the daughter of Rev Arthur Wellesley Richard Whiteman, 1865-1926, and Nina L. Whiteman, 1873-1956. After studying pharmacy at the University of Alberta, Dorothy came to Banff in 1922 to work for Dr. Brett. She subsequently studied at the University of Toronto, Ontario; worked at the Calgary General Hospital, Alberta, from 1926 to 1940; and during the Second World War, worked as a chemist in Quebec, Canada. After the death of her first husband, Tronson James Draper, 1879-1949, an oilman of Calgary, Alberta, Dorothy became a permanent resident of Banff. She owned and operated Travellers Digest in Banff and married Jim Boyce in 1957.

History / Biographical: James Irvine Brewster, 1882-1947, came to Banff with his parents in 1888. While still boys, he and his brother Bill started guiding fishing parties and later formed an outfitting partnership. With silent partners Fred Hussey and Phil Moore, they established Brewster Brothers in 1904. Jim Brewster and Hussey left the business in 1906. In 1909, Jim returned to guide the business. Under his control, it became a major transportation supplier, Brewster Transport Company. Fern Brewster, 1902-1967, daughter of Jim Brewster and Lade Brewster (d.1915), was a sportswoman, businesswoman and homemaker. She was involved in the operation of Sunshine ski area and was a director of Brewster Transportation after her father's death. Fern Brewster's married names were Clarkson and Dooley. Adele (Dell) Brewster (Sibbald), 1896-1983, Jim Brewster's second wife, was also a director of Brewster Transportation.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of papers and photographs of James Irvine (Jim) Brewster, Fern Brewster, Dell Brewster and the Brewster family.; I. James Irvine Brewster papers and photographs, before 1948 and ca.1959, consist mainly of professional papers and photographs relating to guiding and outfitting activities, and to Brewster Transport Company records, including Sunshine ski area records. Series includes correspondence, diaries, legal papers, Sunshine Lodge addition papers, Brewster house plans and other material. Correspondence is incoming and outgoing letters between Brewster and Hussey, clients, and associates regarding guiding and outfitting, real estate speculation and personal matters, etc. 1906-1907. Diaries pertain to guiding, hunting and horse trips, 1897-1901, 1904-1906; entries mainly record clients, territory covered and game observations and records. Also includes articles and hand-drawn map by Brewster on hunting, 1903-1906. Includes 54 photographs pertaining to Brewster Transport after Jim Brewster period.; II. Fern Brewster papers and photographs, before 1967, includes mainly personal papers, correspondence, recipes, press clippings and photographs regarding friends and family, education, Jim Brewster's death and cooking. Correspondents include Carl Rungius, Les Peters, Charlie Beil and Fern Bedaux.; III. Dell Brewster papers, 1925-1967, pertain mainly to Jim Brewster's death. History / Biographical: Justin James McCarthy (Jimmy) Simpson, 1877-1972, was a trapper, guide and outfitter and lodge owner at Banff and Bow Lake, Alberta, Canada. Born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, Simpson was sent to Canada by his family in 1896. He worked briefly at Laggan (Lake Louise), Alberta for the Canadian Pacific Railway, travelled extensively and returned to the Rockies to work on the trail and trap. By the early 1900s, he was a successful guide and outfitter with Carl Rungius and the Alpine Club of Canada as clients. Starting in 1920, Simpson began building Num-Ti-Jah Lodge at Bow Lake as a base for hunting and climbing parties. Simpson and Williamina (Billie) Ross Reid, 1891-1968, married in 1916 and had three children. The lodge was run mainly by Billie Simpson and in 1945 the business was turned over to Jimmy Simpson Jr., 1922-2003 . Daughters Margaret Simpson, 1917-1941, and Mary Simpson (Hallock), 1919-2002, were internationally-famous figure skaters.

Jon had a special interest in topics related to Banff National Park and Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Jon conducted independent research, as well as research for various authors and historians, from the 1980s onwards. Jon was also an active participant in municipal politics in Banff. "For most of Jon’s life, he was engaged in community affairs and fearless in voicing an opinion. He was successful in raising public awareness and his tenacity achieved a personal goal, which was to initiate the use of video for regular Town of Banff council meetings. History / Biographical: Anna Kathleen (Kay) Russell, 1909-1984, was a camp cook, homemaker and naturalist who lived and worked near Waterton Lakes National Park in southern Alberta, Canada. Kay Riggall was the daughter of guide and outfitter Bert Riggall, and Dora Riggall, and the sister of Doris (Babe) Riggall (Burton). Kay worked with her father as a camp cook until her marriage in 1938 to Andy Russell, who later took over Riggall's businesses. Kay Russell was an avid diarist who faithfully documented her personal and family life while working in the Riggall and Russell family businesses and raising five children on the family ranch. Children are: Richard "Dick" H. (b.1938); Andrew Charles "Charlie" (b.1941); Harold John "John" (b.1944); Hugh Gordon Riggall "Gordon" (b.1947); Lorenda Anne "Anne" (b.1952).

History / Biographical: Ella Maud [Woodworth] Kidney (1894-1977) was born in Banff as the fourth of 11 siblings. Her parents were Benjamin Woodworth and Elizabeth [McIntire] Woodworth. Growing up, Maud worked briefly for the Alberta Hotel and the Bottling Works company in Banff. Maud was married to John A. MacAulay in 1917, and widowed later that year. Her twin sons, John A. [Jack] and Thomas A. [Ted] MacAulay, were born in 1918. Maud married Forest H. "Pop" Kidney (1889-1979) on February 14, 1923, and the new family settled into the Kidney home on Wolf and Muskrat Street. The Kidney residence was originally located in Bankhead, but was moved to Banff and sold following the town's closure in 1922. Maud and Forest operated several local businesses including Banff Grocery, Quaker Coffee Shop, Pop's Bakery and Kidney Kabins. The Kidneys were also active in community affairs throughout their lives. Maud Kidney was a long-time member of the Girls' Sunshine Flower Club in Banff [and the club's president for over a decade spanning across the 1940's], as well as the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire [I.O.D.E.] and Rebekah Lodge, and she was matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Banff in 1950. Forest Kidney was involved in the Banff Shriners Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Independent Order of Oddfellows and the Canadian Restaurants Association [CRA], among other groups; in the early 1960's, Forest also served as the President of the Calgary branch of the CRA. Jack and Ted MacAulay grew up together in Banff, where they were involved in Banff's Boy Scouts program and local hockey teams. Jack in particular was an avid hockey player, until an accident in 1940 caused damage to his right eye which kept him from competing. From 1943 to 1945, Jack worked for Boeing Aircraft of Canada Ltd., and in 1946 he was appointed as the Chief Inspector of War Assets for Alberta and the Yukon Territories. Jack married Karin Wallensteen in 1946, and the couple had 6 children together: sons Herb and John, and daughters Karen, Shelley, Jodi and Julie-Ann. Jack served as a coach for the Banff Minor Hockey League for 46 years. Jack also took on several other positions within the Bow Valley community, including working as a volunteer with the Banff Figure Skating Club, a co-founder of the Banff Recreation Board, and a member of the Banff Advisory Council, the Banff Hospital Board and the Banff School Board.

Includes scrapbooks, photographs of Maud and her siblings and parents, trips to Calgary and local activities with family and friends, Maud working for the Alberta Hotel and the Banff Bottling Factory [ca. 1905 - 1915], and local clubs and societies which Maud was involved in between 1930 - 1977 including the Girls' Sunshine Flower Club, the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, the Senior Friends Club of Banff, Rebekah Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star. Series II content pertains to Forest Kidney during his World War I military service in Petawawa, Ontario; swimming with friends at the Cave and Basin and other social activities; travelling with family; local newspaper clippings noting Forest's achievements and community involvement; and Forest participating in events as a member of the Banff Shriners Club and the Canadian Restaurant Association. Series III content pertains to Jack MacAulay at the Kidney family home with his twin brother, Ted; coaching for the Banff Minor Hockey League; participating in other community meetings and programs; personal, professional and medical correspondence [1940 - 1992]; Jack's wife, Karin MacAulay, and their children; and Jack's awards and achievements. Series IV content pertains to extended family and friends of the Kidneys and the wider Banff community. Includes sports and outdoor activities [including swimming, hiking, trail riding, camping, snowshoeing, skiing, and track and field]; early Banff [including businesses, Banff Elementary School and Banff High School, the Woodworth family residence, and construction of the Icefields Parkway]; family friends of the Woodworths and Kidneys [including the Brett family, the Stafford family and the Simpson family]; personal correspondence pertaining to Fred "Ty" Cobb (1931 - 1933); clubs and societies [including the Independent Order of Oddfellows, the Senior Friends Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star]; community events [including dances, meetings, dinners and award ceremonies]; weddings and anniversaries; a visit to Num-Ti-Jah Lodge in 1964; and biographical and genealogical information about Maud Kidney, Forest Kidney and the Woodworth family. Series V content pertains to businesses owned and operated by the Kidney family [ca. 1930 - 1970], including Kidney Kabins, Quaker Coffee Shop and Pop's Bakery; mortgage agreements and property contracts; and government documents. Includes receipts, log books and financial records, photographs of Kidney Kabins and Quaker Coffee Shop, and receipts for land purchased by Forest Kidney, George Noble and others. Series VI contains commercial postcards collected by the Kidney family. Postcards mostly produced by Byron Harmon, and some by G & W Fear and other photographers, and mostly pertain to Banff and the surrounding area [winter sports, wildlife, Banff Zoo, Banff Avenue, scenic views and mountain landscapes, etc].
