History / Biographical: Dr. Gerald Wright (1917-2007) grew up in Brecon, South Wales, and studied medicine in Wales and London, England, throughout the 1940s. He served in the British Army in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1942-1946 in North Africa and Italy. In 1951 Wright moved to Lethbridge, Alberta, due to its close proximity to the Canadian Rockies, where he maintained a general practice as a member of the Hunt Clinic. He went on to serve as Chief of Medicine at St. Michael's Hospital and the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital until his retirement in 1988. Shortly after arriving in Canada he became a member of the Alpine Club of Canada and attended many annual camps, often as camp doctor. He also participated in ACC expeditions to Mount St. Elias (1967, unsuccessful), Mount Alberta (1967, successful as part of the Alberta Team), and Mt. Waddington (1969). He also successfully summited Mt. Robson on his third attempt at the mountain. Wright hiked extensively throughout Nepal, Switzerland, South America, and New Zealand in addtion to the Rockies. He was also a member of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and was a founding member of the Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition, where he served on the Board of Directors, helping to plan and lead many annual hiking trips.

Scope & Content: Fonds pertains to 3 photograph prints of members of the St. Elias expedition in the Yukon, a large-format black and white print of a mountain range [possibly including St. Elias], 11 typed letters to Wright from W.E. (Smoke) Blanchard dated January-May 1965 discussing the expedition, 2 typed one-page summaries of the attempt on the mountain [one written by Blanchard and includes a hand-drawn map of the area around the mountain], a Xerox copy of a letter written on University of Oregon Medical School letterhead listing the members of the St. Elias party and recommended medical tests to have completed prior to the expedition, a two-page typed list of gear & equipment, and a hand-written list of expedition members and the University of Oregon Medical School doctor and their contact information.

History / Biographical: The Alpine Club of Canada, the national mountaineering club, was co-founded in 1906 by A. O. Wheeler and Elizabeth Parker, and other like-minded climbers. The club espoused scientific study and exploration, cultivation of art, public education, acquisition of climbing skills, and preservation of natural areas within the mountainous regions of Canada. Through a national executive, local sections and volunteer committees, the club provided climbing camps, clubhouse, huts, and publications, including the Canadian Alpine Journal. ACC expeditions and projects resulted in pioneer exploration, first ascents, and included mountain warfare training during the Second World War. In recent years, the club's membership has increased dramatically with the popularity of climbing and its programs have evolved to serve the needs of unguided climbers using sophisticated technical aids.

History / Biographical: The Mount Logan expedition was a joint mission between the Alpine Club of Canada and the American Alpine Club that took place in 1925. The expedition was led by A. H. MacCarthy, who had participated in the first accent of Mount Robson in 1913, and officially began in February, 1925 when the team, using horses and dogs to pull sleighs, cached supplies along the route. The ascent started on 12 May when they left the town of McCarthy, Yukon and the summit was reached on 22 June. The Mount Logan expedition was noted as being extremely difficult due to cold temperatures and violent storms. No members of the team were lost.

Scope & Content: File consists of 237 lantern slides from the Mount Logan expedition of 1925; some are survey maps with the route plotted out in typed text. Photos taken by H. F. Lambert, and some by A. H. MacCarthy. Original listing of the lantern slides numbers them at 231 total, 15 are missing and some were labled as "duplicates" (see Notes).

Notes: PS-58, 59, 60, 61, 84, 112, 145, 160, 184, 185, 187, 196, 197, 206, 218 missing from order. PS-208 initially listed as missing, now replaced by "duplicate." Box 6/6 contained slides labled as "duplicates," upon comparison they were determined to be originals and added to the order; they now make up PS-232 to PS-254. This listing was originally part of a larger entry (containing textual records and photographs) for the Mount Logan expedition.

History / Biographical: Richard Guy (1916-2020) and Louise (Thirian) Guy (1918-2010) met in England in 1937, and married in Nottingham on December 21, 1940. The couple had three children together: Mike, Peter and Elizabeth. Louise attended school in Leicester for domestic science, and began working as a teacher during World War II. Louise was involved in numerous charities and community organizations, and supported various disadvantaged groups including deaf students and individuals with leprosy. Louise and Richard moved to Canada in 1965, where Richard worked at the University of Calgary as a professor of mathematics. Richard also served as department head at the university starting in 1966. Richard and Louise were avid hikers and climbers, and the couple went on countless expeditions together in the Rockies over the following four decades. Richard and Louise joined the Alpine Club of Canada, attending about 30 camps each and completing hundreds of summits. In 2015, using a generous donation made by Richard in Louise's memory, the Alpine Club of Canada erected the Louise and Richard Guy Hut on the Wapta Icefield. Summary of "Young at Heart": Do you think that you are over the hill? You have retired and you feel there is not much more to look forward to. Well think again! This book about the inspirational lives of Richard and Louise Guy, will show you that there is a great deal of life beyond the set retirement age of 65 — and beyond 75 and beyond 85. They climbed mountains well into their nineties, and Richard still works today at the age of 96. Louise rode her bike to the corner store until she was 92. History / Biographical: Richard Guy (1916-2020) and Louise (Thirian) Guy (1918-2010) met in England in 1937, and married in Nottingham on December 21, 1940. The couple had three children together: Mike, Peter and Elizabeth. Louise attended school in Leicester for domestic science, and began working as a teacher during World War II. Louise was involved in numerous charities and community organizations, and supported various disadvantaged groups including deaf students and individuals with leprosy. Louise and Richard moved to Canada in 1965, where Richard worked at the University of Calgary as a professor of mathematics. Richard also served as department head at the university starting in 1966. Richard and Louise were avid hikers and climbers, and the couple went on countless expeditions together in the Rockies over the following four decades. Richard and Louise joined the Alpine Club of Canada, attending about 30 camps each and completing hundreds of summits. In 2015, using a generous donation made by Richard in Louise's memory, the Alpine Club of Canada erected the Louise and Richard Guy Hut on the Wapta Icefield. Includes: M67 / 4 - 1 : black leather diary, dated 57 58 59 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to the last few days of the summer 1957 trip carried over from M67 / 3 - 6, a trip in 1958 involving travel to Banff, the annual Alpine Club of Canada hike, staying at the Chateau Lake Louise, hiking in Lake O'Hara, and travel back to Pennsylvania. Trip details for 1959 include travelling by train from the United States to Montreal before continuing on to Banff where she took trips to Lake O'Hara and Skoki - entries for 1959 seem to end abruptly. Scope & Content: File pertains to photographs - mostly prints, also negatives and one glass slide - of the Mount Logan Expedition of 1925. Photographs of the Mount Logan Expedition were mainly produced by H. F. Lambart; also some by A. H. MacCarthy. All images are housed in the original brown envelopes used by the ACC and contain typed notes on the exteriors. Topics include: Going into our first camp on the bars of the Chitina River being a half days run from "Rush Pound," where we stopped and had lunch on the way in ; Packing up at Brysons, being the old camp ground of the Surveys (Barny Bryson) and from which point a trail leads out of the valley of the Chitina (rising 3000 ft) and leading to the head of the Young Creek. MacCarthy took this trail coming in coming out last summer after the reconnaissance. This is the 4th. camp out from McCarthy the next 16 miles to Short River ; Short river Camp, 5th camp out from McCarthy and only 7 miles out from Hubricks. Mountain in back on other side of Chitina Valley. Crossed Clear Water, Canon and Short river before reaching this camp ; Eastward up the valley of the Chitina Valley Tree islands and the morain covered toe of the Chitina Glacier showing. Hubricks Camp near point shown on left, just showing ; The Chitina Valley below Hubrick's Camp distant horizon being the toe of the Chitina Glacier. Mt. Logan would be, if visible, direct centre looking up Chitina Gl. ; Panorama taken from a point on the Chitina just off the N.W. corner of the Chitina Glacier toe, at an old Trig Sta. which seemed to be part of old base line. Shows the range on the south side of the Chitina Valley and the last straight down the valley of the Chitina ; All a little blurred as focus in error set at 15 yrd. Panorama of the range on the south side of the Chitina River Valley, from a point 1/3 mile east of Hubrick's Camp. Logan in distant centre in 433 & 434 [452 & 453] ; Laing in front of his dungeon (Pup Tent). The afternoon's careful inspection of Logan equipment ; Survey tripod on the bars below toe of Chitina Glacier to N.W. line of bace line poasts leading away to W. No end of base mark showing ; From the summit point of the Terminal morains of the Chitina Glacier looking straight west down the valley and showing the trench between the glacier and the N. wall of the valley up which the trail lead to the last point of horse transport, "Trail End" ; The group on the ice in front of "Trail end Camp" ; Ice of the Chitina completely covered with debris, from the shore line on the N. side looking forward to Chitina Point ; Walsh camp at the end of the Chitina Point, the side of an old survey camp of 1913, facing a stretch of water directly off the point, the junctions of the Chitina and Walsh Glaciers ; Group, as per preceding negative showing drift and exposed dry wood on beech, old shore of long since sunken lake. Much old material strewn about. The last timber.
