Pertains to summer trips taken during the summers of 1968 and 1969. Summer 1968 includes travel between Banff and Pennsylvania by airplane and hiking and visiting around Banff, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara and the Icefields Parway areas. Summer 1969 time spent in Banff, along the Icefields Parkway, and in the Golden and Lake O'Hara areas as well as various club activities as part of the Alpine Club of Canada. Also includes lists of birds seen, reservation details, people met and staff of various places, events from Banff (including the death of Fred Brewster and Catharine Whyte receiving an honourary degree), song lyrics, and [what is possibly] a joke. M67 / 5 - 2 : black leather diary, dated 1970 in white ink (possibly white out) on the front cover. Pertains to a 1970 trip to the Canadian Rockies and includes hikes with and without organizations like the Alpine Club of Canada and the Sky Line Trail Hikers as well as stays at the Banff Springs Hotel, the ACC Club House, Lake O'Hara, and the Bugaboo Lodge, BC. Also includes transcriptions from the Abbot Pass Hut Register from 1926-1939 (presumably only of people Lillian Gest knew personally), reservation details, lists of people met, and a list of events from 1970, including the sale of the ACC Club House for $70, 000 (does not mention to who). M67 / 5 - 3 : black leather diary, dated 1971 in ink on masking tape adhered to the front cover. Pertains to a summer visit in 1971 to the Canadian rockies and includes stays around the Banff, Lake Louise, and Lake O'Hara areas, hiking trips with and without organizations like the Sky Line Trail Hikers and the Alpine Club of Canada, and travel between Banff and Pennsylvania by air. Newspaper clipping on page 125 pertaining to the death of Edmee Brewster. Also includes lists of people met and staff (Lake O'Hara Lodge, Chateau Lake Louise, ACC Club House), events from Banff, list of birds, details for a Bow Valley Naturalists trip, and the plaque dedication ceremony for Lawrence Grassi at Lake O'Hara, June 26, 1971. M67 / 5 - 4 : black leather diary, dated 1972 in black ink on fabric tape adhered to the front cover. Pertains to the summer of 1972 spent in the Canadian Rockies time spent in and around the Banff, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara, Jasper, and Tonquin Valley areas as well as travel between Banff and Pennsylvania by air. Insert pertains to diary entries for the final few days of September as the book ran out of pages. Also inlcudes lists of people met, birds spotted at Lake O'Hara, and list of events from Banff (including the move of the Moore house to its current location). M67 / 5 - 5 : black leather diary, dated 1973-1974 To July 20 in ink on a piece of masking tape adhered to the front cover (1973 to 7-20 1974 in faint red paint directly on leather of cover). Pertains to the summers of 1973 and 1974 spent in and around the Canadian Rockies. Summer 1973 includes stays in the Banff, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara, and Bow Lake areas as well as hiking trips with and without organizations like the Sky Line Trail Hikers and the Alpine Club of Canada. Summer 1974 includes stays at various hotels around Banff and in the Lake Louise and Lake O'Hara areas, a helicopter trip to and from Mt. Assiniboine and region, and organized hiking trips with the Sky Line Trail Hikers. Also includes lists of staffs and people met, birds spotted at Lake O'Hara, distances, and a list of events from 1973. M67 / 5 - 6 : black leather diary, titled Sat July 20 1974 to 1975 - Thurs July 14 in ink on fabric [possibly plastic] adhered to the front cover. Pertains to the remainder of the summer 1974 trip (July-September) continued from M67 / 5 - 5 and details from June and July, 1975. The summer 1975 trip included travel between Banff and Pennsylvania by train [heading west] and plane [headed east], stays around Banff, Lake O'Hara, and Lake Louise, and hiking trips with and without organizations like the Sky Line Trail Hikers and the Alpine Club of Canada. Also includes lists of people met, reservation details, ACC Camp details for 1975, Sky Line Hikers trip dates and locations, and events from Banff 1975 including the ACC Club House being completely torn down. Also includes loose items consisting of notes (to Lillian Gest from others and to herself), reminders, invoices, itineraries, and newspaper clippings.

Summer 1924 consists of early details for a trip organized by Caroline Hinman and mainly of lists of names of those included. Summer 1981 consists of time spent predominantly in and around the Lake Louise and Lake O'Hara areas, with shorter stays in Banff at the beginning and end of the trip. Also includes details of a climbing trip two people took over Wenkchemna Pass on Aug 9, lists of people met, staff of businesses around Banff, and telephone numbers. Also includes loose items consisting of notes to self, a postcard, a photograph, guest lists and itineraries for the Sky Line Trail Hikers, and newspaper clippings.

History / Biographical: The Elizabeth Parker hut was named after one of the founding members of the Alpine Club of Canada, Elizabeth Parker. The hut is located in Yoho National Park, near Lake O'Hara in British Columbia. The hut is one of the most popular accommodations run by the Alpine Club of Canada. The Elizabeth Parker hut is made up of two buildings; the main hut and Wiwaxy Cabin. The total capacity of the two buildings is 24 people in the summer and 20 people in the winter. According to the Alpine Club of Canada Guide for Backcountry Huts: Elizabeth Parker Info Sheet: "The present Wiwaxy cabin was the first hut in the Lake O’Hara area, built in 1912 by the Canadian Pacific Railway. This was the same year that the ACC applied for and was granted a two-acre lease for a future hut on the south shore of Lake O’Hara, the site of the Club’s 1909 annual camp. In 1919, the CPR built the present Elizabeth Parker Hut, and by 1923 had built a further 11 huts in the meadow. In 1923/24, the CPR moved all but the first two huts down to the lakeshore, and seven years later donated the last two in the meadow to the ACC. The Club was able to exchange its lakeshore lease for a meadow lease, and in 1931 was in business with a hut at Lake O’Hara - the Elizabeth Parker Hut. As you can expect with log buildings, the Elizabeth Parker Hut has required substantial renovations and upkeep. Over the years the hut has seen a new floor, a new roof, new timbers and new foundation logs, as well as completely new interior furnishings. The outhouses are new, a stove in the Wiwaxy Cabin has been added and the entire meadow around the hut has been rehabilitated and reseeded. Over the past couple of years, the Huts Committee has worked very hard to restore the appearance of the hut as closely as possible to its original state. The Canadian government designated the Elizabeth Parker Hut as a Federal Heritage Building in 1997." “...her memory is preserved by the very popular tribute inscribed with her name, the ‘Elizabeth Parker Hut’, maintained in one of the most charming centres of the Canadian Rockies, close by beautiful Lake O’Hara.” (Quotation from Elizabeth Parker’s obituary by A. History / Biographical: The A. O. Wheeler Hut is located at Rogers Pass National Historic Site in Glacier National Park. The hut was built between 1945 and 1946, and it is a Recognized Federal Historic Building. The hut is named after one of the founding members of the Alpine Club of Canada, Arthur Oliver Wheeler. A. O. Wheeler was the first President of the Alpine Club of Canada, and he served as Honorary President of the Club for almost twenty years. According to the Alpine Club of Canada's website: "Carrying on the tradition of the Glacier House which was closed in 1925 and now exists only as a few concrete foundation pieces, the Wheeler Hut serves as a base for the legendary powder skiing of the Rogers Pass area. In summer there are numerous opportunities for climbing and hiking. This is the birthplace of alpinism in North America. Many of the routes are steeped in tradition and history, an interesting fact to remember as you reach for that next impeccable quartzite handhold or take that next footstep along one of the many trails which wind through the lush cedar forests that dominate the region. This is the one and only ACC hut which can be reached by vehicle in summer. Winter access is a mere 2 km along a well-broken and level trail. It is difficult to convey to the first time visitor the number and quality of the summer and winter day trips possible from the hut. The potential is outstanding from this single hut including summer hikes to Asulkan Pass or up the Great Glacier Trail to the Illecillewaet Glacier, summer climbs to Sapphire Col, Mt. Sir Donald, and Avalanche Peak; winter ski tours to Young’s Peak, the Seven Steps of Paradise, the Dome Glacier – the list goes on and on. Go and explore for yourself, you will not be disappointed! The Wheeler Hut is quite luxurious! A propane system provides the cooking and lighting, with two wood stoves for heating. The hut sleeps 30 in summer and 24 in winter."

History / Biographical: The Stanley Mitchell Hut was constructed in 1939 and it is recognized as a Federal Heritage Building. According to the Parks Canada Directory of Federal Heritage Designations: "The Stanley Mitchell Alpine Hut is a rustic log cabin located at the edge of a forest, and enjoys scenic views across a meadow to a glacier and mountains. It is comprised of a centre section flanked by two, modest wings and features a steeply pitched gable roof. Located in the centre, the main entrance is covered by a porch gable. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building. Heritage Value The Stanley Mitchell Alpine Hut is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building because of its historical associations, and its architectural and environmental value. Historical Value The Stanley Mitchell Alpine Hut, built by the Alpine Club of Canada for the use of its members, is associated with the development of mountaineering in Canada. It is also associated with the opening up of Yoho National Park of Canada to ski mountaineering and winter recreation. Architectural Value The Stanley Mitchell Alpine Hut is a good example of rustic architecture. Its natural building materials and construction methods reflect the rustic aesthetic. It is also a very good example of functional design, to serve as a base facility for summer camp programs and winter ski touring. The Environmental Value The Stanley Mitchell Alpine Hut maintains an unchanged historical relationship with the natural character of its site at Yoho National Park of Canada. Located in an alpine meadow at the edge of a coniferous forest, it is compatible with its picturesque setting and well known by the hiking and climbing community. Character-Defining Elements The following character-defining elements of the Stanley Mitchell Alpine Hut should be respected. The rustic aesthetic, for example: the simplicity of the overall form of the building as expressed by the scale, massing and symmetrical composition of the main block, entrance porch and side wings, all sheltered by steeply pitched gable roofs; the choice of local materials, indigenous building methods and rustic design details such as the horizontally laid, peeled round logs with saddle-notched corners, the exposed rafters at the roof eaves, the random rubble masonry fireplace and chimney, the exposed beams and joists, the hardwood floor, and the inscription carved into the face of the wood mantelpiece. The unchanged historical relationship of the Stanley Mitchell Alpine Hut to its alpine meadow site, and the manner in which it is compatible to its picturesque setting which is familiar to the hiking and climbing community of Yoho National Park, as evidenced by: the building’s unchanged relationship with its natural site; the overall rustic appearance and natural building materials of the building, which harmonize with its natural environment; the building’s visible location in a meadow at the edge of a forest."

History / Biographical: The Fay Hut was built in 1927, and it was the first structure built by the Alpine Club of Canada. The original Fay Hut building was burnt down in a forest fire in 2003, but was rebuilt in 2005 by ACC volunteers. The re-built Fay Hut burnt down in 2009. The Fay Hut was located in Kootenay National Park, British Columbia, in Prospector's Valley. The hut was also used as a stopping point for mountaineers on their way to the Neil Colgan Hut or the Valley of Ten Peaks. The Fay Hut was named after Charles Fay, a founder and President of the American Alpine Club. Charles Fay made over 20 trips to the Canadian Rockies. He also participated in the first ascents of Mount Victoria and Mount Lefroy. Fay was also an Honorary Member of the Alpine Club of Canada.

History / Biographical: According to the Alpine Club of Canada's website: "Built in 1965 by the ACC as a project proposed and largely overseen by William Putnam, the hut has since seen extensive renovations which have transformed the two-storey wooden building into a deluxe backcountry destination. With a complete propane system which includes an oven for baking, a very efficient wood stove and a fully stocked cooking area, comfort is guaranteed. There is sleeping space for 20 on the second level and a spacious common room with adequate space for hanging gear. A large and very hot wood-burning sauna is an absolute treat on those clear, cold winter nights! [...] Fairy Meadow is one of the great backcountry ski destinations in North America, with outstanding ski mountaineering and ski touring. In summer the hut is a base for excellent granite mountaineering. The hut is well equipped with a wood sauna, extensive kitchen and bunks. Access is via Helicopter or a very long and very difficult hike (hiking is absolutely not recommended). The Great Cairn Hut is a day’s mountaineering travel to the south." The ACC's Backcountry Huts: Bill Putnam (Fairy Meadows) Info Sheet states: "In 1965, the Fairy Meadow Hut was constructed by the Alpine Club of Canada as a project proposed and overseen by Bill Putnam. In 1973 the first structure, which was woefully inadequate for the heavy snowfall of the area, was totally renovated and enlarged, a project once again largely funded and overseen by Bill Putnam. Bill Putnam devoted his life to the mountains. He was the President of the American Alpine Club for years and was on their Board of Directors for decades. Putnam has also contributed heavily to Canadian mountaineering history. He spent half a lifetime exploring the Selkirks, Purcells and Rocky Mountains, and took part in writing guidebooks for the same areas (Rocky Mountains of Canada – South and North, Columbia Mountains of Canada – Central, and West and South). In addition to these, he has written several history books about the same mountains. The hut is regularly used in the winter months for ski camps, both by the national Club as well as by various Club sections. The Club’s General Mountaineering Camp, although not utilizing the hut itself, has been held in the Fairy Meadow area on three separate occasions since 1981. The hut renovations in the summer on 1992 included complete gutting and refurbishing of the interior, new outhouses and the addition of a propane stove. The hut is presently in excellent condition".

History / Biographical: According to the Alpine Club of Canada's website, "the Neil Colgan Hut is the highest permanent, habitable structure in Canada", and it is located in the Valley of the Ten Peaks. The hut sits at 9,700 ft, and is within distance of Mounts Little, Bowlen, Fay and Quadra. The hut accommodates 18 people and includes propane stoves and lanterns. According to the Alpine Club of Canada's Backcountry Huts: Neil Colgan Hut: Info Sheet: "Second to the scene of Lake Louise set against the backdrop of Mt. Victoria, Moraine Lake is perhaps the most photographed and best known mountain scene in the Canadian Rockies. The area behind the first row of peaks which can be seen from the lake provides excellent alpine climbing on snow and ice routes, and makes an ideal location for a high altitude climbing hut. The area saw its first hut in 1964 when the Calgary Mountain Club erected a hut at the top of the couloir between peaks 3 and 3 ½. This original hut was named for Graham Cooper, who died while descending after the construction of the hut. The hut was in a poor position, however, because it encouraged use of the couloir as an access route to the hut. By the late 1980s the couloir had seen many rockfall accidents and several fatalities. The hut was dismantled and replaced by the Neil Colgan Hut in 1983. Neil Colgan was a warden in Banff National Park when he died from injuries sustained in a horse accident in the backcountry. The hut was largely funded by his family in his name."

History / Biographical: According to the Alpine Club of Canada's website, the Silver Spray Hut was built in 1994 and is located in the Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park, B. C. The hut is allows mountaineers to access the Selkirk Mountains, as well as Kokanee, Caribou and Woodbury Glaciers. According to the Alpine Club of Canada's Backcountry Huts: Silver Spray Cabin: Info Sheet: "Constructed in the 1920s to serve as a bunkhouse for the Violet Mining Company operating in the area, the BC Parks Branch took over the maintenance of the cabin by the time the mines closed in the early 1930’s. The Kootenay Section of the Alpine Club of Canada became involved in the maintenance of the hut over many work parties throughout the 1950’s. In the 1960’s, park workers began to take a more active role once again and initiated substantial repairs to the hut, as it was clear that a lot of work needed to be done to the cabin. In the 1980’s building materials were brought into the site to replace the old cabin with a new one, but local protests to preserve the original cabin for historical interpretation stopped any new construction. The BC Parks Branch included the cabin as one of the many provincial historic sites in the area, for the historic interest of the location, and the remaining evidence of old mine workings."

It was later dismantled by ACC members, and the stones from the original hut were used in the construction of the current Great Cairn Hut. History / Biographical: According to the Alpine Club of Canada: Woodbury Cabin: The Woodbury Cabin was built over the summers of 1983 and 1984 at the site on which an old mining cabin once existed. The hut was also built to draw park users into the less crowded areas by providing a base for their recreational activities. Sapphire Col Bivouac Hut: The Sapphire Col Bivouac is a basic mountaineering shelter in the Asulkan Ridge. The hut is located in Glacier National Park. R. C. Hind Hut: The hut is named after Robert (Bob) Hind, a lifelong, active member of the ACC. The hut was built by the ACC for BC Parks in 1971. The hut is maintained and booked through Assiniboine Lodge. Robin Cyril (Bob) Hind, 1911-2000, was an electrical engineer and mountaineer at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was a Life Member of ACC, joining in 1933, and attended over 30 ACC camps. Hind received the Silver Rope Award in 1935, was recipient of Centennial Medal, and served the ACC in offices of President, Vice-President and Chairman of Hut Committee. Bob Hind climbed most of the peaks in Rockies and Selkirks, including some first ascents. He also climbed in Wales and the Alps. Hind was a member of the American Alpine Club and The Alpine Club, London. Lloyd Mackay Hut: The hut is located on Mt. Alberta and is a basic mountaineering shelter. The hut was renovated just before the 75th Anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Alberta. The hut sleeps 6 people. Lawrence Grassi Hut: Named after legendary mountain guide and coal miner, Lawrence Grassi. When he retired from the coal mines, Grassi became the assistant warden at Lake O’Hara in Yoho National Park, and he built various trails throughout the Park. Mount Lawrence Grassi, near Canmore, and Grassi Lakes, along with this hut, are named after him. Graham Cooper Hut: The hut was located between Mt. Little and Mt. Bowlen in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, along the Alberta and British Columbia border. The hut was named after Graham Cooper, who was a member of the team that built the hut, who had passed just after the hut was built. In 1983, this hut was replaced by the Neil Colgan Hut. Castle Mountain Hut: Is located in Banff National Park, on the Goat Plateau of Castle Mountain. It is a basic mountaineering shelter. It serves as a base for those climbing Brewer’s Buttress, Bass Buttress, and Eisenhower Tower. The hut is closed during the winter months. Boswell Cabin: The Pat Boswell (Toronto Section) Cabin is located at the Canmore Clubhouse site, and is named after Pat Boswell, a long-time Club member and Club Manager of the ACC. The cabin was designed to accommodate families and small groups, it includes a partition wall and sleeps up to 6 people. The Memorial Hut: The original Memorial Hut was built in 1930 for the War Veterans, the building was made of stone in an unstable area near Penstock Creek. The second Memorial Hut was built in the Outpost Lake area in 1947 and was named after Cyril Wates, who joined the ACC in 1916 and was a prominent mountaineer and ACC member, including Club President from 1938 to 1941. This Hut, however, was built too close to the lake, as per Parks regulations. The third version of the Memorial Hut was built in 1962 and opened in 1963 at the ACC Camp in the Valley. It was named in honour of the late President Rex Gibson, as well as Cyril Wates, known as the Wates-Gibson Memorial Hut. The Jacques Lake Cabin is the ACC's newest backcountry hut, located in Jasper National Park, AB. It was originally a Jasper Park patrol cabin, and it is only open during the winter months.
