Title: Tea Service

Material: black basalt; paint

Description: A black basalt tea service made for the opening of the south wing of the Banff Springs Hotel in 1907. All of the pieces have a black unglazed exterior, glazed interior, green glazing around the lids, rims and touches on the handles. Each piece has a multi-coloured (white, blue , green, yellow red and white) shield made up of the provinces’ coat of arms, underneath that, a ribbon with the word “CANADA” and underneath “BANFF”. On the top of the shield is a royal crown. Each piece has an identification number in green on the bottom. Painted in green on the base are: (a) the teapot with a lid (8.5x14.0cm wide) “A3455 11”; (b ) the milk jug (10.0X9.0cm wide) (“42” carved into the basalt) “C3455 9”; (c) the lidded sugar bowl (7.5X10.0cm wide) “C3455 7”; (d) the small creamer (5.5x11.0cm wide) “C3455 7”.
