Topics include travelling back to Banff from a visit to Concord by car, day to day life, weather, visits from friends and visitors, radio programs [mostly operas and the news], news pertaining to the war [including Italy entering the war in June, British children being brought to Canada, the Blitz], the Lake Louise-Jasper highway officially opening [Pete and Catharine drive up for the weekend, their first visit to Jasper National Park], the deaths of Louise Rungius in May and Dave White in late June [also includes details of Dave's funeral], errand trips to Calgary [mostly to meet with Clifford about Dave's estate], Catharine and Pete's 10th wedding anniversary, visits to Bow Lake to paint throughout July and August [a large forest fire was burning about 30 miles north of Bow for most of July], Banff Indian Days, Pete joining the militia ["Non-Permanent Active Service" force part of the 2nd Battalion of the Calgary Highlanders], going on the annual Skyline Trail Hikers trip in August, painting/sketching [including a short visit to Lake O'Hara in mid-August for this purpose], Catharine going to Concord for a few weeks in early September, Pete and Catharine going to Victoria at the end of September [Annie was having health issues and was advised to go to Victoria - they went to help], cleaning and household chores [including installing new blue linoleum in the kitchen], minor repairs to the roof and other outdoor work to the property, wildlife, books Catharine and Edith are reading, trips to Mount Temple Lodge to help Cliff with various chores, descriptions of meals, updates on the construction of the new Lake Minnewanka dam, photography and cameras [including colour photography], Pete helping construct the basement of the Mount Royal Hotel, events and people in Concord, various holidays [both Canadian and American], going to the movies, working on the annual Christmas card, and various other Christmas activities, presents, and parties.

Many typed letters have hand-written notes and post scripts added throughout. Some are written on hotel/lodge letterhead. Most typed letters are written on a single side of paper, hand-written letters are mostly double-sided. Some letters are marked with a small x in pencil, indicating where Jon Whyte made notes for use in his project "Catharine Robb Whyte, Peter Whyte: Commemorative Portfolio," originally published in 1981. 109 - 17 contains a sketch of the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge's main building, recently completed. 109 - 56 contains a sketch of the ground floor of Pete and Catharine's home, including the new partition wall in the living room.

M67 / 1 - 5 : black paper diary, dated 1935 on a paper sticker adheared to the front cover. Pertains to Walking trip through glacier Park June 26 to July 5 ; Lake Magog Camp ACC July 13 to Aug 2 ; Banff Aug 2 to Aug 25 ; Fay Hut Aug 26 to Sept 1 ; O'Hara Sept 3 to 8 ; Motor trip home. Includes total milages of trips and a list of food taken on the seven day Fay Hut trip. M67 / 1 - 6 : brown leather diary, dated 1936 on a paper sticker adheared to the front cover. Pertains to a visit to Banff before driving to Edmonton and then Jasper to begin the annual Alpine Club of Canada trip. Title of insert two reads "Aplinists Will Scale Mt. Brussels" - clipping is adheared to the page and cannot be removed. M67 / 1 - 7 : brown leather diary, dated 37 in red paint (possibly ink) on the front cover. Pertains to various trips and visits made by Gest to Banff and around Banff National Park. Includes details of visits to town, hikes, climbs, and motor car trips. The diary is written on the right hand pages until Gest ran out of room, at which point she returns to the front of the book and continues on the left hand pages. M67 / 1 - 8 : black leather diary, dated 38 in red paint (possibly ink) on the front cover. Pertains to trips Lillian Gest took to Banff, Lake Louise, Big Bend, and the Alpine Club of Canada camp at the Columbia Icefields during the summer of 1938. M67 / 1 - 9 : brown leather diary, dated 39 in red paint (possibly ink) on the front cover. Pertains to trips to Glacier Park, Goodsir Park, and a motor car trip to Washington and Oregon during the summer of 1939. Also includes title lists for reels (possibly pictures/slide shows), as well as a list of flower names at the back of the diary. Also includes loose items, mostly consisting of newspaper clippings, Alpine Club of Canada pamphlet, and three handwritten pages of loose paper.

Pertains to trips taken to Jasper Park Lodge, Glacier Lake Camp, the Icefields Chalet, and Emerald Lake during the summer of 1940. Includes details of movies and photographs taken at the back of the diary. M67 / 2 - 2 : black leather diary, dated 41 in red paint (possibly ink) on the front cover. Pertains to trips to the Chateau Lake Louise. Twin Falls, and Emerald Lake taken during the summer of 1941. At least part of the summer was spent attending a motor car tour organized by Caroline Hinman. Also includes lists of names and addresses of other people who attended Hinman's tour, as well as details on milage and on films and photographs taken. M67 / 2 - 3 : black plastic 6-ring diary. Pertains to a collection of trip notes, mostly trips throughout the Canadian Rockies, from summer 1942 to summer 1945. Mostly consists of place names, people, and trip highlights - not much detail. M67 / 2 - 4 : black leather diary, dated 42 43 in red paint (possibly ink) on the front cover. Pertains to Alpine Club of Canada Camp at Consolation Lakes (July 19-24) and a stay at Deer Lodge at Lake Louise (Aug 16-22) in 1942, an informal ACC Camp at Lake O'Hara and a stay at Deer Lodge (Aug 16-18). For both summers she notes "In Browne House, Banff" which possibly could have been a home available for rent. Also includes details pertaining to the various costs of the trips (years not specified), the fish hatchery, a list of home movies from 1942, a list of stills (no date), and a list of equipment used at the ACC Camp in 1943. M67 / 2 - 5 : black leather diary, dated 44 45 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to trips taken by Lillian Gest during the summers of 1944 and 1945. 1944 includes travelling from Toronto to Banff, staying at the Browne House (presumably a guest house or other such rental property), annual Alpine Club of Canada Camp in Paradise Valley, Trial Riders of the Canadian Rockies trip to Fatique Pass and Eohippus Lake. 1945 inlcudes travelling from Toronto to Banff, staying at the Browne House, annual ACC Camp in Larch Valley, Sky Line Trail Hikers trip in Lake O'Hara (Aug 3-6), and a trip with A. Harmon [?] to graveyard cabin and Summet Pass. Also includes a list of people met during these trips, a list of equipment left in the Browne House (1944), trees local to the Canadian Rockies, and a small sketch of downtown Banff focussed around the Bow River Bridge. M67 / 2 - 6 : black leather diary, dated 46 47 in red paint on the front cover. Trips taken during the summer of 1946 include staying at the Chateau Lake Louise (June 29-July 12), Emerald Lake [Lodge?] (July 12-Aug 2), annual Alpine Club of Canada Camp in the Bugaboos (July 13-24), Mitchell Hut, Yoho (July 26-30), Banff (Aug 2-Sept 3), and Bow Lake (Aug 3-9). Trips in 1947 included time spent in Calgary during the Stampede, annual ACC Camp, pack trip organized by Caroline Hinman, and time spent around the town of Banff. Also includes list of people met during trips, and milage and details about trip from Banff to Merion (September 1947). Includes milage list and list/details of people met around Banff, including bankers, hotel staff, cleaning ladies, and the boy hired to cut the grass. Also notes the passing of Soapy Smith that winter. M67 / 3 - 2 : black leather diary, date 49 50 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to various motor car, hiking, horseback (orgranized by Caroline Hinman), and leisure trips taken around Banff, Jasper, and Yoho National Parks during the summer of 1949. Trips taken during the summer of 1950 mostly consist of Alpine Club of Canada activities and Camps and with the Sky Line Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies. Also includes details on milages for different motor car trips and people met over both summers. M67 / 3 - 3 : black leather diary, dated 51 52 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to various trips taken during the summers of 1951 and 1952. 1951 includes travel from the Paoli, Pennsylvania to Banff, stays at the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise, a camp based in Lake O'Hara (possibly as part of the Alpine Club of Canada), a night spent at the residence of Aileen Harmons [?], a trip with the Sky Line Trail Hikers, and another stay at the Banff Springs Hotel. 1952 includes many trips involving stays at the Banff Springs Hotel and other luxury hotels in Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper, as well as trips with the ACC, the Sky Line Trail Hikers, and Caroline Hinman. Also includes lists of people met during both summers at various locations, highlights of Banff news (including the deaths of Hal Waterhouse and Col. Phillip Moore, marriages, construction work, and illnesses), lists of equipment, and telephone numbers. M67 / 3 - 4 : black leather diary, dated 53 54 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to a 1953 trip that started in Banff (with stay at Banff Springs Hotel) before going to Jasper where Lillian Gest participated in an Alpine Club of Canada Camp, then a few days in Lake O'Hara (staying in the lodge) before returning to Banff and then heading home to Pennsylvania. The summer of 1954 consisted of a motor car trip originating in Pennsylvania that worked west through Michigan, North Dakota, and Montana before reatching Banff. Also includes lists of mileages, people met during both summers, telephone numbers, information about flying with Air Canada (most likely in 1953), and the deaths of the Mexican tourists on Mt. Victoria, July 30, 1954. M67 / 3 - 5 : black leather diary, dated 54 55 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to the last few days of Lillian Gest's 1954 motor car trip, detailing the second half from Banff back to Pennsylvania and the 1955 trips to Banff, Mount Robson, the annual Alpine Club of Canada Camp, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara, and Vancouver. Also includes lists of people Gest met in various locations throughout 1955 and a brief list of changes in Banff, including tree cutting for the new Trans Canada Highway, the opening of the new Timberline Hotel, and expansions of the Mount Royal Hotel and the Upper Hot Springs. Includes: M67 / 4 - 1 : black leather diary, dated 57 58 59 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to the last few days of the summer 1957 trip carried over from M67 / 3 - 6, a trip in 1958 involving travel to Banff, the annual Alpine Club of Canada hike, staying at the Chateau Lake Louise, hiking in Lake O'Hara, and travel back to Pennsylvania. Trip details for 1959 include travelling by train from the United States to Montreal before continuing on to Banff where she took trips to Lake O'Hara and Skoki - entries for 1959 seem to end abruptly. Also includes lists of people met over the three years, equipment used for various trips, and a list of events since Sept. 1958 including the opening of the new Sulphur gondola on July 28, 1958, the tearing down of the Brewster stables on Spray Ave, and the conversion of the ski lodge to the Post Hotel in Lake Louise. M67 / 4 - 2 : black leather diary, dated 59 in red paint and end 1959-1962 on a piece of paper taped to the front cover. Pertains to the remainder of August 1959 (carried over from M67 / 4 - 2), and summer trips taken during 1960-1962 consisting of time spent around the Banff townsite, Lake O'Hara, and Bow Lake areas, annual organized hikes with the Alpine Club of Canada, as well as travel to and from Pennsylvania - usually by train. Also includes lists of people she met, new additions to staff at hotels Lillian Gest stayed at, luggage details, and events pertaining to Banff like construction projects, births, marriages, and deaths (including the death of Jack White in 1962, his house now being a library, and the fate of the grocery store he ran). M67 / 4 - 3 : black leather diary, dated 1962-1964 in red paint on the cover. Pertains to the end of Lillian Gest's 1962 summer trip (carried over from M76 / 4 - 2) and trips taken during the summers of 1963 and 1964. The 1963 summer consists of travel from Pennsylvania to Banff by train, stays at various hotels (including the Club House [possibly the Alpine Club of Canada Club House], Moraine Lake Lodge, and Emerald Lake Lodge), hiking trips in Revelestoke Park and Lake O'Hara, the annual Sky Line Trail Hikers trip, and alternating between stays in Lake O'Hara and at the Club House before returning home. The 1964 summer followed a similar pattern, with stays at various hotels, hikes (both with and without organizations like the Sky Line Trail Hikers and the ACC), and travel between Pennsylvania and Banff by train. - File pertains to a photograph album depicting three seperate trips taken by Lillian Gest: Summer in the Canadian Rockies 1928 ; Hunting Trip September 1928 ; Summer of 1929 The Tyrol and the Alps. The Summer 1928 trip was undertaken primarily by horseback, but included some hiking/climbing trips. It began at Grant Brook and the Moose River in Mt. Robson Provincial Park, worked southeast through the Tonquin Valley, and then further to the Saskatchewan River. This trip was organized by Caroline Hinman and corresponds with Insert 1. The Septemeber 1928 Hunting Trip may have been organized by a guide named Wilson and began around Sheep River, AB before working into the Pipestone Pass on horseback. Includes photographs of stag and ram heads at what is possibly Gest's home. Also includes enlargements and greeting cards from "fellow-campers." The Summer 1929 trip begins with arriving by boat before heading inland to Verona and Cortina before reaching Austria. From there the party heads into the Alps, includes many photographs of climbers on glaciers. Also includes views of the Matterhorn, Lake Geneva, the Castle of Chiffon, greeting cards, and a newspaper clipping detailing Caroline Hinman's group of ladies crossing the Saskatchewan Glacier [date unknown]. Photographs from this trip are a mix of personal photographs and souvineer photographs. Inserts pertain to overviews/advertisements for the Summer 1928 trip and the Summer 1929 trip that would have been sent out by Caroline Hinman in advance detailing routes, expectations, and prices.
