History / Biographical: William McCartney Davidson (1872-1942) was born in Ontario and worked as a journalist in Toronto before moving to Calgary and purchasing "The Albertan" newspaper in 1902. William published the newspaper for 24 years, before selling the company in 1926. William and his wife, Ethel Heydon (? - 1969), moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 1930. Between 1938 and his death in 1942, William wrote a daily editorial article for The Albertan titled "Today, Tomorrow and Yesterday".

Scope & Content: Scrapbook consists of newspaper articles from the "Today, Tomorrow and Yesterday" column by W.M. Davidson, November 1938 - April 1939. Scope & Content: File consists of black and white photograph negatives depicting coastal British Columbia, May - July 1901, and the Tilikum voyage, July - November 1901. Content includes photographs of Vancouver Island, British Columbia including unidentified sailors, Indigenous people, buildings, lighthouses [Cape Beale], canoes, sealing schooner, ships, boats, landscapes, and shorelines. Associated prints identify individuals as being Nootka [Nuu-chah-nulth], some taken in Port Alberni. File contains photographs of human skulls, cave burial, and potentially residential schools - access is restricted to select photographs. Content includes Tilikum voyage to Pacific Islands, with possible locations depicted including Cook Islands, Manihiki and Penhryn, Somoa, Fiji, and Tahiti. Photographs depict exterior and interior views of the Tilikum, unidentified Indigenous people, missionaries, sailors [in associated prints identified as Captain Winchester, Captain Dexter, Captain P'au on "Children of Tahiti" boat, and H.M.S. Conservation: Most glass negatives have silver mirroring, accretions, flaking, and loss of the glass support. Some show signs of previous mould exposure. Prior poor quality storage and processing has degraded the quality, these are also apparent in the associated prints. Several glass negatives were broken. Two nitrate film show yellowing of the support.

History / Biographical: Banff Winter Carnival, also known as Winter Sports of the Canadian Rockies, was the first post-war winter sports programme held in Banff, Alberta. The organization had Banff directors, Calgary directors and Directors-at-large from Alberta and outside the province. A wide variety of social and sports events took place under the organization's direction.

Scope & Content: File consists of prints and negatives depicting Banff Winter Carnival events including ski jumping, hockey, figure skating, log chopping competitions, toboggan races, swimming contests, dog sled races, ice sculptures and queen contests between 1920 and 1949, primarily from the 1920s. Includes snowshoe hikes, Sunshine Ski Camp, and personal motor trips to Lake Minnewanka. File includes photographs and prints by Lou Crosby, Dan McCowan, Byron Harmon. Some prints are stamped or annotated by the photographer and include processing receipts and original housing envelopes.
